Method for Troubleshooting the P0420 Indicator Light Fault

Oxygen Sensor

Check the voltage of sensors and whether the oxygen sensor is damaged, and inspect for any faults in the wiring.

Appearance and Sound

When abnormal noise is heard, please check whether the appearance and carrier of the catalytic converter are damaged, blocked, burned, etc.

Exhaust System

Check if there are any faults in the exhaust system, such as exhaust leaks or blockages in the exhaust pipe.

Fault Code

You can use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. After clearing them, restart the vehicle and check the malfunction indicator light.

The Reasons for Initial Failure

Excessive Temperature

If excessive exhaust emissions occur, the HC and CO entering the catalytic converter will undergo transitional oxidation reactions, leading to an excessively high temperature within the catalyst; When a gasoline engine is operating normally, the temperature at the exhaust outlet can reach 1292°F, which may exceed the optimal operating temperature and reduce its lifespan.

Chronic Poisoning

Sulfur(S) and Plumbum (Pb) in gasoline, as well as Phosphorus(P) and Zinc(Zn) in lubricating oil, form oxide particles after combustion in the engine, which adsorb onto the surface of the catalyst. This prevents the catalyst from contacting the exhaust gas, thus losing its catalytic activity.

Surface Carbon

When a car operates at low temperatures for an extended period, the catalytic converter fails to activate. Smoke emitted from the engine will adhere to the surface of the catalyst, preventing it from coming into contact with CO and HC. Over time, this causes the pores of the substrate to become clogged, affecting its conversion efficiency.

Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction

If the fuel contains lead or silicon, it can lead to oxygen sensor poisoning. Additionally, improper usage can cause oxygen sensor carbon buildup, ceramic fracturing, heater resistor wire burnout, internal wiring detachment, and other malfunctions. Oxygen sensor failure can result in improper air-fuel ratio and reduced catalytic converter efficiency.

This catalytic converter doesn't work. I rebuilt my engine, new rings, honed cylinders and rebuilt cylinder head with new valves. My exhaust manifold/catalytic converter was full of cracks so I ordered this cat with a new upstream and downstream O2 sensors. Still have a P0420 catalyst efficency fault. I tried to message the seller with no response. Don't bother wasting your time with this product.

Everything seems to be well constructed but the gasket was received almost folded as it was loosely packaged in the same bag as the catalytic converter and all the other pieces were loose in there as well. Haven't installed yet but I will update with fitment and ease of installation and how it performs and if it corrects the issues.
