The indicator adjustment mechanism is very loose making fine adjustments almost impossible, the finish of the granite surface plate is rougher than any I have ever used. While the flatness of the granite is within tolerance the fit and finish of this unit is well below what I have come to expect from this brand. I do not recommend this product.

The general appearance seems quite good, but the bottom surface is extremely rough. Just a saw cut finish, which will likely scratch any surface it is slid on. Not at all goof for a granite surface table if you chose to use it on the surface plate..

I bought mine through Amazon Warehouse in "Used, Acceptable" condition for about half the price of a new one. As expected, there were some small chips on the edges but they don't effect the reference surfaces. The problem is with the metal parts:The column is turned straight and square (at least as far as I can measure) but not ground. It also isn't very hard and arrived with numerous small dents & dings. The ones on the sides were fairly easy to remove with very light strokes from a fine file. There were also several dings around the circumference of the bottom end, which was more of a problem since it needs to be absolutely flat. Even microscopic bumps keep it from sitting squarely on the base, and I ended up spending a couple of hours until I decided it was 'good enough' for what I needed. The post clamps & fine adjustment mechanism were the weakest part though. They're cast out of aluminum - which galls and binds up with the column, and even more so with the adjustment screw parts. The point on the clamp where the indicator lug meets the bracket should have been milled flat for secure clamping but was painted over. I removed the paint and left as flat a surface as I could. (A mill would have made short work of it but I don't have one yet.)The good: It was cheap and, with some work, I was ablt to make it work well enough for a beginning hobbyist. The bad: Well, it's not really Bad - unless you need a Good one. There's a big difference between 'good enough for occasional hobby use' and Good. There's a big price difference between the two as well so, for the price I paid and what I want it to do, I'm keeping it.

Nice for the price. The face is nice and smooth and flat as quickly measured with a good 1-2-3 block sliding under a digital dial indicator that reads to "half tenths" (.0005 resolution) - measurement didn't move. More than flat enough for my needs. The holder/adjuster had some issues. I had to chase the threads of the holder where the indicator attaches (6mm) because the threads were chewed up a little. The up/down adjuster uses a cheap screw that feels like it has a slight bend in it - the adjuster works fine, it just has a tight spot every half revolution. I'll probably just replace the screw with something better. The locking knobs have plastic handles plastic, but do secure the holder to the post well. As a whole the holder/adjuster it is perfectly serviceable and fulfills its intended purpose. The post is well polished steel (it doesn't seem to be chromed or plated), and seems sufficiently hard enough so that tightening the holding knobs don't mar the surface of the post. There were two chips in the granite on the left side edge, not on the face, so its only a cosmetic issue but annoying. I as able to super glue one of the chips back on. The other chip turned to dust in the box. The packaging was really poor. The granite was wrapped in 1 layer of cheap bubble wrap, and the post and holder were wrapped in another layer of cheap bubble wrap, but separate from the granite. They were both in a slightly too-big box so they could both bounce off each other during shipping. I'm surprised the granite was not chipped more.If they spent another .003 cents on a little more bubble wrap to prevent the chips and done a better job with the adjuster threads I would have given this a five star review. All in all happy with the purchase besides the nit picks noted.
