Application

Application of forstner bits

Forstner bits are mostly used in the woodworking industry to drill holes that are larger than those that can be made with ordinary drill bits.Forstner bit is designed to make precise holes that have flat bottoms (except for the small pilot point in the center) smooth sides and a clean entry cut with limited splintering in any type of wood.

Forstner bit can cut at angles or cut along the edges of a board with a drill press while the wood held firmly in place on the table beneath the drill bit, something that one would be hard-pressed to do with a spade or twist drill bit.

Less Tear Out

Less Tear Out

With a Forstner bit, there is less tear-out. The forstner bit is soft on the wood and only removes material when it is absolutely necessary.

For through holes in some wood,It is strongly recommended that you drill the hole with a backboard. If you want to get a through hole without a backboard, you should stop drilling when you feel the spur is just going to come out(the spur is just goes through the other side),then turn the borad over, start to drill at the exact same place,it just goes right through, and you get a perfect hole on either side.

Comparison

Comparison

Twist bits can cut a relatively smooth-sided hole, but they are only available in smaller sizes than 1/2-inch and leaves a tapered bottom to the hole.

Spade bits are great for drilling quickly, but they cut far too aggressively to give a clean hole, they may leave a bit of a rough entry point and somewhat rough edges

Hole saws can be used to drill through holes of diameters up to 4 inches, but you can't cut a partial-depth hole with a hole saw—they have to be through holes.

Drill Press

Drill presses get best performance

You can use a Forstner bit in a hand-drill, but you should use a drill press. Hand-drills are less accurate, and you might end up with the hole not being level. Drill presses are easier because you can set the depth and the angle and forget about it while you make multiple holes.

For different wood,It is highly recomended that experimenting with different rates of feed. Usually, the faster the feed, the rougher the cut but the less heat generated. Try to find the best balance.

Sometimes, if forstner bits don't do a good job of ejecting the cut material from the hole, you need to remove the bit and extract the cut material regularly.

Used it in my drill press and with little downward pressure two of the teeth snapped off. Didn’t push it any further then sent it back.

I had concerns that this would dull quickly but after drilling over 40 holes (albeit in a soft wood) with the drill press, t was still extremely sharp. It is lot better than I expected and I am delighted with it .

The list of shortcomings are as follows:1) the external teeth are not sharpen by any means.2) One tooth was terribly bent upon arrival.3) The internal cutting edges already show nicks after cutting 3” of cumulative depth on Butternut so I’m guessing it’s not hardened.4) The center point is not concentric with the OD.5) It would not cut with a lot of force when trying to plunge straight down. I’m not exactly sure what it was getting hung up on but I’m guessing the large center post and dull exterior teeth. The bit required rocking and back forth to get the cutting edge to engage. This resulted in a slightly larger hole than I wanted. This is a waste of money unless you’re using it on construction lumber and don’t care about the final dimensions and finish. The positive trait of this bit was that the OD was exactly 2.00”. This would have been good if it didn’t require the rocking motion to get it to cut opening the hole.
