Recognized as the "workhorse of canisters" for their legendary strength and durability, high-output FX Series filters sweep the tank harder and faster to retain a greater amount of debris. Combining patented SMART PUMP performance-optimizing technology with auto start/stop operation and intricate multi-stage cleaning featuring an expansive basket-in-basket media tray design, FX owners will spend more time enjoying their aquarium, and less time maintaining it.

I have always been a hang on the back filter guy. After getting a new 60 gallon tank, I decided to make the switch. This filter has been nothing short of amazing. It was so easy to set up and worked perfect right out of the box. The cleaning process has also been super easy. It also has the ability to change the filtration that you need at any time. Overall an amazing filter that I will continue to use.

Llego a timpo y en perfecto estado, ya lo instalé y es un gran filtro no tan solo por su potencia sino también por ser muy silencioso

I use this on my 50 gallon Red eared slider tank, I don't have to clean his filter every two days anymore!!! I rinse the filters weekly with aquarium water and change media when needed and this thing works great. Expensive!!! but worth the initial investment, saves you time in the future. I have an FX5 on my 60 gallon freshwater tank and the FX6 is less noisy. It did seem to be a little noisy at first but now its whisper silent.

I have kept fish for about 50 years. I have experimented with many aspects of the hobby, studied everything, and done trail and error. Now I just run one 150 gallon tank, but at times have had many. I also have out door ponds. What I know is that most crap you read from so called experts on the web are "crap". After 50 years the basics are the same. The equipment has improved. Most people have no clue as to what a filter can do or should do. Go to my forum at yardcraphome dot com and open the critters section.I hooked this fx4 in today. I have been running the older fx5 (new model is fx6) for years and consider it a good buy. The fx5 had some challenges as to leaks and easy to break clamps, but suspect/hope they improved with the fx6/fx4 update. The fx5 is very good, best filter I have owned.Flow rate is important, but also is volume. These fx6/fx4 are huge.If you just want flow, buy a circulation pump. What you want is the water to pass over lots of helpful things before returning to the tank.I use multiple filters for different things as that helps as to maintenance. . One (fx5) is mainly for biological which is by far the most important. Due to the great 900 gal output, have it hooked to a a Tetra Pond bio filter that they claim handles 4000gal (doubt that). That reduces flow rate, but the combination is over kill for biological in my tank. The two together are like a large, but closed sump filter which can hold lots of bio material. The now dead Fluval 300 (or something?) was for chemical and needed replacement. I looked at filters to replace it and almost went with the new Ehiem 600 (great filters), but in the end got the small brother of the large Fluval that is still working great after years. I decided on the fx4 as opposed to the fx6 due to the fact the volume was enough when just for chemical, and I don't want my tank to become a rushing river. One thing with these is adjusting flow rate is very easy so maybe should have gone with the fx6.I hooked it up today and the only problem was a leak at the input connection. I wrapped some Teflon tape and easy fix. I filled it with Chemi-pure (because I have used it for decades) and and Purigen (which is just an excellent product). The flow rate is not that much more and my fish friends are large fish.I don't think flow reduction will be needed. My opinion is that for many, the fx4/fx6 is a best buy.The down side is they are large. Large is also the good part, but maintenance must be done from time to time so keep that in mind. These are heavy. I have a small room with a sink where filters live and tubes pass through the wall, so easy for me.My 3rd filter is the Fluval G6 which is a joke. This would be good for a nerd type with a small tank with low fish levels. I only keep it hooked in for the mechanical cartridge (no where near as good as the older Magnums, but very easy to service). Mechanical filtration occurs with all filters and while nice, should not be the focus of your filter choices.

This filter is superb. I have it running on a Fluval Roma 240 tank. Which originally came with the Fluval 306. A good filter in its own right, but this is the next level. It’s really easy to maintain and due to its size and filtration ability I only clean mine out once very 5-6 months, where as with the 306, this I had to clean almost weekly. The intake and output can both be independently adjusted, so you can reduce the flow if it’s really stirring up your tank.It came with filter media and having had this running for well over 5 years now, I still have the original media in place and have no need to replace it any time soon. Mine came with a free gravel vac, although this was more of a novelty than a bonus. I just use a normal gravel vac as part of my water changes so the one included isn’t of any use as the water stays within the system. After years of constantly being on, it has been faultless but quiet it is not. There is a continuous humming noise coming from it and if the tank was in a bedroom you would not want the filter running. Keep this in mind before you buy as it is not silent. Our tank is in the living room and the filter sits in a cabinet, but it’s still quite loud, butit doesn’t bother us, however if it we’re silent running it would be an amazing and faultless filter. It includes a small tap that allows you to drain out water direct from the filter, this makes water changes incredibly easy. However, if you’re filling the tank back up you need to ensure it’s dechlorinated water so as not to harm the fish or filter bacteria.Other than the noise, I really can’t complain about the filter at all and would highly recommend it.If you cover your filter Inlet with pond filter sponge, you can protect fish and shrimp from being sucked in and prolong the gap between cleaning the filter out. Which is what I do and it works wonders.

I've been keeping tropical fish for over 50 years, and I know quality when I see it. In point of fact I've always been more of an Eheim man, until a friend told me about the Fx6. My complaint with Eheim was the fact that it can be a pain to prime, and I didn't want to go through that again, so I took the plunge and bought the Fx6 for my newly setup 125 gallon tank. When the package arrived I was shocked at the size of this thing. It reminded me of a canister vacuum cleaner. After a quick unboxing, and cursory accounting of parts, I began the process of assembling the filter at 5:15 PM. At 5:45 PM, I turned it on, watched it cycle, and then settle down to a almost silent hum. I didn't have to do anything but watch. It did it all. No sucking on the intake to get it to prime, no water splashing everywhere because you couldn't get the hose on fast enough, and no fuss at all. How nice is that? The outtake, while very strong, was easily adjustable, so the stream pointed upward, and away from the middle of the tank. You cannot hear one little drop of splashing water. I will be keeping Discus and they don't like hurricane water.Like most new tanks mine was quite cloudy, and had been for a couple of days before I started the filter. Overnight the cloudiness completely disappeared and the water is almost crystal clear.Bottom line: while expensive it's one of those "you get what you pay for" situations and I consider this easy to assemble, simple to start, highly efficient filter getting what I paid for. I recommend it most heartily for the reasons I have mentioned. Incredibly easy to assemble and starting is a matter of plugging it in. Very quiet and by all appearances very, very efficient. If you have one of these there is no need whatsoever to use an additional filter on a large-100-200 gallon tank. This big boy will take care of everything for you.
