Decided to order this Kanna after reading the reviews. Pleased with the Item. Great size to have for certain jobs. It looks super nice next to my other planes. It was very easy to set up. Very little scraping of the block to get the main blade to fit. The blade was easy to sharpen and get the back flat. I got a burr very quickly. The blade is well made for an inexpensive plane. The chip breaker is low grade but worked as it should. It was too wide to fit in the plane so instead of scraping against ramp I ground the sides of the steel instead. Then it slid down into place and stays tight in the block. I got silky thin shavings with no problemsLets seen how long the long the blade will work without forming cuts or knicks on the edge.

Really nice quality and once set up properly (check out lots of videos on YouTube or similar) makes light work of finish planing to an amazing finish. Well recommended.

After the initial set up of flattening the bottom, creating wave patterns, and of course sharpening, this thing is performing beautifully. I’m a beginner with woodworking so I got some cheap Japanese chisels, saws, and this. I figured cheaper tools would be better to learn proper sharpening and using techniques for when I chip the blades.Using this plane I’m able to do a great job of truing things without a planet or jointer. Which is great because my first projects were a planing board and some low sawhorses, as the start of building the work area suggested by Toshio Odate instead of a big workbench taking up space in my garage. Can’t wait to get more use out of this, plus I know I can use different wave patterns in the dai for different needs. For those who don’t know, this is not meant to be a plane for burnishing or getting the surface incredibly smooth. BUT, if you’re coming from sanding alone, this will yield much smoother results than that when tuned properly. Also, judging from the angle of the blade (mine is about 37°) these are meant for softwoods or most North American wood types.

So Satisfying in so many ways... Here's how impressed I am with this product: On receiving the plane I believe I observed the tiniest of cracks in the region where the iron slots into the body. In rushed my greediest consumer thought monkeys: "Return it! Return it!".. But as far as I could see it was the tiniest of cracks, so I thought why not fit the iron properly and take a whack at some shavings before I schlepp it back.. The iron was seriously tight in the body (which is where I'm thinking my miniscule crack might have come from). I beat on it for quite some time, released the iron and found it to be respectably sharp (but certainly no hairshaver) but more importantly imo the back was dead flat. I fitted the iron to the body properly (a bit, in a pilgrims fashion), took about an hour, started making paper out of a piece of alerce (!) .. and after a little tapping around on the plane, I'm extracting clean smooth full width shavings with thicknesses down into the .03 mm range, or roughly 1thou. I had high expectations of a japanese plane, properly tuned and sharpened etc. (and there are plent of positive recs on this one) but this exceeded all mine. I have no doubt I can tune the sole and sharpen the iron and start cutting some 20 micron tissue on this thing. I doubt I'll send it back. Whatever flaw this plane may (or may not have) it deserves a life in my shop. And that my friends is satisfying. Borrow my planing board but don't ask to borrow my plane. I gave 3 stars for ease of use because the plane arrives with the iron essentially sledged into the body, if you fumble that iron you're gonna bleed a bucket, and hey you tune it with a hammer. To recap, I'm at a loss as to how much respect this $50 tool deserves..

In regards to Japanese hand tools, I tend to get tunnel vision obsessing about the quality of steel. I own two high end kanna so I had my doubts when ordering this much cheaper one. The blade was in OK condition out of the box but didn't need too much work to achieve that mirror finish. Edge retention, while not as good as my more expensive planes, is not too shabby. Impressive really. Had to do the usual tuning to seat the blade correctly and ready the sole. Don't buy this if you're not willing to put in 1-2 hours worth of set-up. If you do have the patience and know-how to properly tune a Japanese plane then you won't be disappointed with this plane.

Not bad at all for the second Japanese hand plane I ever purchased. Very well made, very sturdy and will definitely last decades I have no doubt. The only thing you need to be concerned about is whether you are willing to put in the effort to tune it to bring the best out of it. This is true of all Japanese hand tools (except for maybe handsaws), but you must TUNE it yourself and set it up on your own when you get it. This plane is no exception. It will work out of the box. But to get the most out of it the only way is to condition the sole of the wood block and sharpen the blade yourself, which took me 4 solid hours. But once I did all that, I managed to make shavings that, instead of curling up, would shoot out the back of the plane like the ones they show on the Youtube videos. Amazing bargain for such a high quality product.

I'm editing my review, in protest of the skyrocketing price. These are certainly a good product, but WTF!! I bought mine for $50, so WHY have these gone from $50 to almost $300?!!!! They're a good tool, but sure as Hell not worth that much! For half that, I can get an excellent quality kanna, with a hand forged White Steel iron, from Japan Woodworker.com. and you can get these exact same kannas on other sites for about $60.Someone got greedy.

This is my first Japanese plane. I can't believe the quality of this for the price. Truly outstanding. I looked at several you-tube videos on setting up a Japanese plane. It takes some trial and error to get it right. I spent about a total of 45 minutes on the setup. I didn't sharpen the blade as it seemed to be very sharp and well honed. I have many standard western planes of excellent high quality but I feel this is going to become one of my favorites. You feel so in-tune with the wood. The plane almost becomes an extension of your thought process of what you want to achieve. Quite a feeling. I love it and highly recommend. I'm finding myself now just going into the shop, grabbing a piece of wood and creating shavings. I'm getting tissue paper thin shavings on cherry and loving it.
