Choosing the Correct Filter Size

stack of green frame 16x20x1 filters showing nominal and actual size being organized by employee

Nominal Size vs. Actual Size

The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 16 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 15.50 x 19.50 x 0.75). All filters have both.

Measuring Your Air Filter

If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the width x length x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.

  • To maintain a healthy lifestyle, as breathing dirty air can put you at risk to develop asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments. Plus, old filters can cause system defects which may lead to unwanted expenses via energy costs and repairs.

  • We generally recommend replacing your filter every 90 days to keep your system running efficiently and air clean. But this is subject to change based on filter size and variable factors for pet owners, allergy sufferers, homes with children, etc.

  • Most of our filters are universally compatible and will work with any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or HVAC system as long as you choose the proper size. But if you see a specific brand name on a listing, make sure it matches your unit model.

  • This varies for every customer depending on specific needs such as the number of vents in your home. However, our selection includes package quantities that range from 1 to 12 filters, so no matter what your situation may be, we've got you covered.

  • After finding the right size, turn off the power supply and remove the cover from your intake vent before taking out the old filter. Then just insert your new filter to match the direction of air flow, replace the cover, and turn the power back on.

Not happy with customer service. Returned product for almost same cost as filter. I would have rather just kept the filter and sold it privately. You can get Merv13 for cheaper through another company. Don't waste your time

Fits our furnace. It needs to have a small pull tab on the end to be able to pull it out from the slot. But works fine

I bet U have the same thought that the carrier is going to ruin the filters in some way. Well yup, as U can see in the photo I thought right. BUT, this seller put the 2 filters together wrapped in plastic and put them in a box bigger than the filters allowing them to float around and low and behold the filters were untouched. They were completely untouched. They are just what I wanted. I usually buy in quantities of 8 and 12 but these were for a special reason. The price of filters has gone sky high but these were priced ok for me.

My mother's condo has weird sized furnace filters. We couldn't find any in town so I ordered from Amazon and they arrived in a couple of days.

I recently swapped out the air conditioning filter in my home, and this one worked great overall! It fits perfectly, and the quality is solid—definitely helps keep the air cleaner and improves the efficiency of my AC. My unit seems to be running smoother, and I’ve noticed less dust settling around the house.Installation was super easy—just popped out the old filter and slid this one right in. It’s also pretty easy to clean and maintain. The only thing to keep in mind is to double-check the size before buying—make sure it matches your AC unit’s specifications. For the price, this filter does the job well and helps keep air fresh without much hassle. Definitely recommend if you’re in need of a quick replacement!

How do you personally rate an AC filter? Of course, they all have the mfg. industry rating for quality air flow and that is helpful, but what does that really mean to you and your family? Can you really tell the difference between a "4, 7, 10, or a 14"? Is the higher price worth it for the higher or highest rating? Let's face it, if you bought the higher end option for every part of your house or your car, the total sales price would 2-3x more! Who could afford that? So, here is what I can tell you. What came with my brand new AC central unit was a filter that could be removed and cleaned and re-inserted. It claimed to be a "7" and you were advised to clean it every 90 days. By day 45-60, I was periodically sneezing throughout the day and night. Upon going to the disposable filters rated Merv 8 and this brand, I experienced no more sneezing and cooler airflow for a full 90 days and this is with 2 dogs and a cat and a family of seasonal allergy sufferers. However, again, there has been no more sneezing, and the feeling of cooler air in the household. It has been so cool in the house this August through Sept, that I have actually had to raise the air Temp in the house from 76 to 77 degrees, as 76 just felt too cold, especially at night. While it is now 77 degrees inside, the cool air from the AC and filter just feel cooler. Plus this value box of 2 filters is a great value versus buying just one. Also, the mfg. ships them in a box to lessen the risk of crushing during shipment. So, I rate this AC filter and its value box an "A".
