I have purchased many of these over the years and finally gave up on this style. They simply did not last more than one winter or at most two. The exposed heating element is dangerous. We had one playful donkey pull it out of the tank and nearly set the barn on fire. Look around for other products that might work better for your situation.

Bought to keep my garden pond from freezing over. Had one for many years that stopped working so I bought this as a replacement. Worked well for the end of winter we will know for sure next January.

2 years ago when snomagedon attacked us we had no way to keep the stock tank defrosted, and fought the ice all winter. In TX you never think you need something to take care of thick ice. Everyone was sold out of tank heaters. So I purchased this in the spring and kept it for the winter. When it turned cold, and we once again had a terrible cold wave come through and everything was frozen, we hooked it up on our tank and had NO ICE! Even on the bitterest days the tank was ice free. Didn't make a huge difference in the electric bill either. Would recommend highly

I used it to rescue a small water fountain / reservoir that was in danger of cracking. My old (~15 years) heater had failed and it was frigid outside. This heater melted the mass of accumulated ice within 36 hours. The heater is well made and very powerful. The shipping was prompt, which I really appreciated.Happy New Year!

I AM UPDATING THE REVIEW BELOW. I ORDERED THIS ON THE 18TH OF DECEMBER AND RECEIVED IT ON THE 6TH OF JANUARY. THE RETURN WINDOW WAS JAN. 31 (LESS THAN A MONTH). THIS WEEK (LESS THAN A MONTH FROM PLUGGING IT IN) I WENT OUT TO FIND THAT IT WAS BARELY WORKING. PULLING IT OUT OF THE WATER I FOUND THAT IT HAD COMPLETELY BURNED THROUGH THE ELEMENT. SCARY SINCE MY ANIMALS WERE STILL ATTEMPTING TO DRINK FROM THE FROZEN WATER. SELLER SAYS IT IS PAST THE RETURN WINDOW AND CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. WISH I HAD PURCHASED THIS LOCALLY.ORIGINAL REVEIW: Really melts the ice quickly in chilly, north-central Washington. I wish the element wasn't exposed (I have the same brand for plastic tanks in my fish pond), but so far it has not been a problem. Definitely worth the money if you don't want to haul water all winter. It is a treat for all the critters to have no ice in their trough.

It dethawed alittle too well and then decided to start melting its own cord so thats fun. Not sure how I'll go about keeping it in there considering the cord comes out the side next to the giant metal heated part

I had one these for over 10 years. It’s in a large rubber tub (40 gal?) used for mini donkey & goat It keeps ice from forming without burning the tank side. It doesn’t heat the water too hot to drink. The heating element stopped working after 10ish years. So happy to find replacemen.

Seems to work well. Cord was very stiff and difficult to keep out from under elements. Does not clear the whole tank from ice but it thins it, closer to the unit is is clear.

Purchased Dec 21 2014, put in use December 28, Feb 21st it tripped the GFI, heating element had disintegrated. Used in Ontario Canada, purpose was to keep the horse water trough from freezing.
