We love this stuff for our strawberry patch. The straw is slightly tacky once you water it in place. It helps reduce weed growth and seems to keep the slugs away from the berries! We also use aluminum stove top burner liners to surround the bas of each plant and the results are spectacular!

This stuff works really well with protecting grass seed during its germination and growing periods. I completely covered fresh topsoil and seed and the growth was amazing. It holds together well and doesn’t blow away even in heavy gusting conditions. I am very happy with this product and I highly recommend this to anyone trying to grow grass. Otherwise there are absolutely no issues with this stuff.

There was a bit of snafu with my order (they sent straw with grass seed and fertilizer). I can't have fertilizer in my yard because of my epileptic dog. The company IMMEDIATELY responded to my message, sent me an RMA form (there was a FEDEX glitch that they quickly resolved) and sent me the correct replacement, no questions asked, no hassle. As far as the straw and tack goes, it is pet safe, densely packed and plentiful! It's easy to spread, covers a LOT of ground, and is perfect for growing new grass on new topsoil. Fresh smelling straw, cut to manageable pieces, and does the trick. This is actually the third bag I've purchased and each time, perfect.

I love this product. It’s expensive, but much better than regular straw or “mulch hay” for covering newly seeded lawns and wildflower patches. It’s easy to use and stays put, even on moderate slopes. It doesn’t contain a lot of weed seeds, dust or mold, or stick together in heavy clumps that suffocate underlying seedlings. The short lengths make it easy to distribute evenly, and allow delicate seedlings to push up between stalks to reach sunlight. While the plastic covering is not environmentally friendly, it does keep it dry and free of mold even when stored in a shed or barn. I’d prefer to see it sold in recyclable paper bags like the ones pine shavings are sold in.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing grassy weeds and flea beetle. I've purchased this product in the past and used it sparingly and didn't have a problem. This year I used it over more of my garden and I got grassy weeds that I've never had in my raised beds and I also got flea beetle everywhere that I used the mulch. I've never seen a flea beetle in the 35 years that I have gardened here but I got them everywhere that I use the mulch this year. Could be a coincidence but...

Excellent product. I live on an island with poor sandy soil. This stuff really makes watering managable. The dirt here has nearly no water holding capabilies, so much so that in our hot and dry weather, The soil would dry out in about 6 hours, i had to water twice and in some cases 3 times a day to keep some plants going. Not with this product. After applying i only need to water onces a day. I would imagine that after i get around to ammending my soil with peat moss and compost i could go for days without watering. As for the weed suppressing qualities, i am satisfied. The common weeds that normally pop up are totally suppressed where the mulch is thick enough. The only thing that comes up is this strange grass that seems to be abnormally strong as I've seen it come up out of this much in areas that are as much as 3 inches thick. I can hardly call that a failure of the product, this grass is just that strong. If you are cursed with sandy soil, i can't recommend this enough.

2 week update: This mulch has lasted through two storms (one of which was sustained 10 mph winds and 40mph gusts pretty much all day). It remained in place and there was no run off. We are now seeing seed germination as well. *Highly recommendedWe tilled and seeded a very large section of our backyard (1000 sq ft) and needed something to make sure the seed stayed where we spread it and hopefully keep things moist since we are planting in the spring and need it to grow and establish before the heat of summer comes. I didn't want to get a bale of hay since it has weeds, so I did research and found this product. I really liked the idea that it had a 'tack' to it.I have to say, when we were spreading this straw, I had some doubts. The straw is very light and in smaller pieces. It's incredibly easy to spread by hand. You do have to be sure you don't drop it in piles because of how light it is. It took us about 15 or 20 minutes to get it on. That was a week ago. We've had a couple of storms with some wind and everything is still in place. The tack it has on it isn't a heavy one so the straw can be moved if you need to do some fixing in places. All in all I'm very happy.

A bit pricey for just a bale of straw - but far more convenient, so it was worth the cost. In the past when I did any grass seeding, I would need to seek out a farm that had straw for sale - not easy unless they had a sign out; or go to my local home improvement store and buy one of their bales - they weren't cheap and there was the hassle of loose straw streaming behind me and in my wagon. This is ideal! Bag is sealed and dry when it arrives at my doorstep. There is a bit of tackiness -- but not as much as I expected - so it sort of stays together when you start throwing it over your new lawn. Just remember to water immediately after initially putting it down - that helps with the tackiness -- since you have to water a new lawn at least daily anyway.I bought two bales for my less than 700 sf new lawn - but ended up not needing the second bag - there was plenty in the one small bag. But the second bag is still sealed -- I'm sure I could use it for something else without it 'going bad' - as an open bale of straw would. So, overall, even though a bit pricey - the convenience made it worth it. Great idea!Oh - and the lawn turned out great - so it worked keeping the birds, wind and rain from taking the seeds.

Don’t see much difference between this and a bail of straw. Would have to be used in an area with no wind or traffic.
