I've used it once, and it worked well. One star off for the USB cord being moderately short (but adequate for me, so far) and built in. Can't change to a different cord, if I want either longer, or if the connector gets damaged (which is extremely unlikely). And, to be fair actually, the built in cord has an advantage -- I once dropped an external, USB optical-drive, with the wire plugged in. It landed right on the cord and broke the connection on the drive. Unrepairable.

So this did not work right out of the box. I was very close to sending it back but discovered I really need the software to handle both DVD and Blu-ray. I found a product called videobyte which allowed me to rip the movies into mp4 file which is what I wanted for the ultimate goal

I'm using it for Blu-ray and works great. I was surprised that it didn't take very long to burn a disc. I think it was around 10 to 15 minutes or so to burn an 8 minute video and not really that much longer to burn a 1 hour video. My only complaint is the cable is waaaaaay too short. I know we're moving into 4k (then 8k), but I thought the video looked awesome (1080p) on my 4k television.

This is a standard, basic Blu-Ray drive. The actual drive in mine was a Matshita (Panasonic) BD-MLT UJ240AS. This drive reads and writes the original standard BD-R spec, up to BD-RE dual layer (50gb).This drive does NOT read OR write BDXL (100gb TL and 128gb QL) or 4K UHD discs. It doesn't claim to, but others had asked so I wanted to clarify. The capabilities are listed in the screenshot I attached. It's sturdily built, and has a permanently attached cable that ends in both USB-A and USB-C, and you use other one, not both. It's bus-powered with the single cable. The fact that it reads C2 errors for CDs actually makes it pretty darn good for Audio CD extraction. It's solidly built, and seems like it'll last a while. Even though the cable is permanently attached, it's attached solidly and doesn't feel like it'll fray or weaken easily. It does what it says and does it well, for the quite low price. Just know what you're buying.
