This is absolute garbage. It was very hard to get working the first time I tried. I almost returned it, but then it worked that one time. Now, six months later, it won't work in my MacBook at all. I think the built-in USB cable is bad.My computer works fine. The only thing I'm getting out of this drive now is an occassional set of lights, and as soon as you try to eject the tray it's done.Very frustrating. Worst piece of technology I've ever bought. I absolutely DO NOT recommend this product.

You've got to have a media player type software and the Windows Media Player only gets you so far. PowerDVD works great with this. All the talk about "flimsy"...I've had desktop DVD players that were more flimsy, not to mention even high end laptops. It's about average for build quality but so far it's had no issue playing various types of bluray and dvd media, both self-created and store-bought.For the price, companies used to pre-package player software with these, so that's not great, but it doesn't look like any other player comes with a player either. All in all:Pros:Cost is okaydoes what it advertisesCons:no included playerData Connection cable needs an extension (very short)does not pull power and play over a single cable (need both cables plugged in to work)

Update 2:It has been 2 months and 1 week since I bought this and it has stopped working. I spent WAY too long troubleshooting thinking it was maybe a driver issue and tracking some possible registry keys for UpperFilter and LowerFilter which I have run across in my previous life in tech support. Nothing would work. Then I switched from Windows to Linux and the issue remained and I knew for sure it's fully dead. Inserting any disk it just spins slowly with an quiet but audible buzz I don't recall hearing before and the light flashes for a long time then turns and stays solid. No disk ever gets detected. I thought it was reading slower the last week, but never tried any definitive testing. For giggles I tried a bit of IPA 99% on the lenses, but they looked to be totally clean already and didn't help. Avoid this e-waste.Update:My original review still stands, however DVD reading can be made to work. I requested a replacement device and it arrived in the same condition, but a little worse. Blu-Ray works, DVD doesn't. The replacement also loses connection and requires you to occasionally adjust the built in USB cable since something is either broken under the insulation or the soldering is bad at the end inside the drive. Not gonna attempt to track it down. The DVD CAN be made to work, though. These (fill in your favorite colorful language here) sellers are selling REGION 2 (Europe, South Africa, Japan, etc.) coded drives in REGION 1 (USA and Canada). Both of the ones infront of me were region 2. Absolute garbage. You can burn 1 of your 4 region changes to get this to play region 1 DVD's which for USA Amazon customers will literally be necessary for everyone. And right after typing that, I realized the default should be 5 for a player (Google seems to agree), so either the factory made this device for another region and then set it to 2 without resetting the counter to 5 or the firmware they copied had already been changed once. Either way, this lowers your ability to use this device if you move around the world alot (you will be missing 2 of the 5 changes by the time you get it working here in the US). Card readers and USB seem to work fine.Original still relevant review:Sadly, not fit for purpose. This is meant to replace my old internal DVD/Blu-ray drive as my new PC case no longer has front bays. I already have software for decrypting both DVD and Blu-Ray disks. This drive had no problem reading the 2 Blu-Ray disks I have tested with it. It could not read any of the 5 DVD disks I tried (4 known working and 1 fresh un-opened movie). The failures varied from no disk detected to no video streams found (audio, chapters and subs found) to only 1 or more video streams found (on 1 disks it was the movie stream, on other disks it was various copyright or previews found). Unplugging this and plugging in my old external Dell GP60N drive I was able to confirm all 5 DVDs I was testing worked without issue. I didn't bother testing the HUB and card reader functionality as that was only a nice to have and does not affect my needs.I don't need a drive that only works with Blu-Ray disks, I need one that can play anything I throw at it.

My kids rent DVDs from the library but we don't have a computer witha DVD player anymore. We've been rescued!Note that MacOS typically wants control over the eject sequence - which is fine for me.

This is a great combo Bluray / DVD player. YES, it will read both Blurays and DVDs (and CD-ROM). NO it does not come with any bluray or DVD software like PowerDVD so you will need to have your own software. NO it does not come with any CD burner software so you'll need your own there as well. The reader comes with a USB-C cable to plug in, BUT, it has a built in USBA/C cable in the bottom of the reader. Use that dual cable power it and to have it read the discs. Using the third cable it comes with will provide power but it won't read the discs. This took me a few minutes to figure out but once I took another look at the picture it made sense (I hadn't found the built on one yet.) Another reviewer said they had to plug in both the A and C dual cord to get it to work. I didn't find that to be true in my case. I plugged the A into a single USB 3.0 connection and it worked perfectly. I ripped a bluray with MKV and it took about an hour to do. It read/ripped at 2X. I haven't tried a DVD yet (other than to have it read to make sure MKV could) but I believe the instructions said it would go at 8X for DVDs.All in all I'm super impressed with this external reader. It does all I need it to do and more! The built in power cable also seems to be a big plus since I can't lose it.

Who would imagine that we still need a CD drive, yes I still need it because our xray imagine clinic only sends medical results with CD. So this portable CD drive saves us in 2020s. I don’t need to instill extra app or software to run CD. Very easy to use!
