I purchased primarily to check the temperature of oil or having to hold onto the probe in the food to check for doneness in close quarters. The infrared works well for both purposes by pointing at what you want to check for that items current temperature. It also came with a long instant read temperature probe( In a plastic protective tube) also, helping to avoid burns.With either, the long probe or the infrared "gun", it provides a distance, thereby minimizing your chance being injured by splashing/poping grease or touching a rack or edge of the pan. Provides relatively accurate temperature readings.

A nice robust digital thermo. I use it to measure the temp of my pizza stone. It works well and is quite durable. Easy to use and comes in a really durable case.

I have used this thermometer gun in more ways than I thought I would. From cooking and smoking meats, to checking my thermostats and heat sources for my pets, it helps me to get a good "ballpark" figure that is generally dead right. I haven't had to worry about any temp issue. Aim and shoot! Poof! Temperature is known and no guess work.And I am not talking about the included meat thermometer! Just the gun itself!
