Higher quality than others I've used. Definitely throws a good shower of sparks. Large enough & hard enough to last for years if taken care of. Nice product. I'm making a fatwood handle for it. Very satisfied. Wish they offered a bigger one but this size is great too.

I've been through a lot of ferrocerium rods some being much more expensive than these. Still, I think I like these more than most that I've ever had. Also, considering the price, and the fact that these things are huge, I think these will be my go-to rods for now on (assuming they are available). Some of the comments I read about these make feel I should share a couple simple points. First, and most important, the proper and efficient use of ferrocerium rods takes practice. If you are just learning, you are probably gonna jack up a few rods before you get good with them. Also, it is absolutely crucial that your striker is a good quality high carbon steel. I currently use a Buck knife made of 420HC stainless steal. When you do learn to use them properly, they are, in my opinion, the most reliable fire starting method available. Here's another tip, before striking I like to quickly rub my striking edge back and forth along the rod, maybe for 20 passes, using moderate pressure (around 150g or the weight of decent quality pocket knife). Doing this will heat up the rod, charge it with static, loosen up some fine ferrocerium, and give you a larger shower of sparks when you do strike. Also, I think this helps reduce waviness from building on the rod. Lastly, when striking, you are not really moving the striker, instead you should be pulling the rod back towards yourself and over the striker.

There really isn't a need for a handle or a pointed end for rods of you are using them as intended. These work well without the unnecessary bits that just add cost to the end product. They are Ferro rods, and they are plenty big. Expect thousands of strikes.Coating is fine, nothing too extravagant but it doesn't need to be.Need a rod? May as well get a big one without all of the extras.

If they came with a handle to insert them into, that would be amazing!

I had one before used it gor camping. Had it for years. Had to give it to airport secretary a few weeks ago. Why? Font know. Kind of useless with out a knife or something to strike against it. So bought 2 more. Have one in the car. Never know. Other at home to start fires in the woodburner and out doors. Match or lighter would be easer, but no fun in that. Works good. Fun to use. Not necessarily a must have item but the boyscout in me said be prepared.

This is a great product. Have been using it for the past 4 years and I can tell this is going to last more than my life time. Great amount of sparks, perfect size, very useful and customisable. I use the back of my knives to scratch the rod, never been a fan of those tools people use for the same task. I'm going to get a couple. Totally recommended.

Big ferro rods like these will literally last you for years and the size makes them very easy to hold and control compared to some of the tinier ones on the market. After one scrape to remove the exterior paint I was throwing strong sparks immediately. At the time of purchase these two rods were $16.99, which is a great price for rods this big that work this well. These rods do not come with a striker and while some people might complain about that, I actually look at it as an advantage because, IMHO, the standard strikers that come with ferro rods are worse than useless. When I first got into using ferro rods I ordered a pair of rods that at I initially thought were defective. Turns out the rods were actually fine, but the included strikers were so bad that it made it impossible to make anything more than a tiny spark. I got a $1.99 pair of scissors and use them closed as a striker on both the old rods and these new rods... sparks fly everywhere! The only minor disadvantages I can see are:1. If you want a firestarter for a compact/ultralight kit then obviously a big ferro rod like this might not be what you want, but that's just the nature of the product.2. I really like that there is a hole pre-drilled for a tie-off, but in my case I have paracord that's just a hair too thick to put through the hole easily. That's not a showstopper though and of course a slightly thinner twine will work fine.
