I used this to dig a drain for a 3 inch pipe. Works really well around tree roots and easy to shovel.

I am amending my review of this product, actually, the company. My shovel broke at the blade. Those things happen. It happened about six months into my ownership, way outside of Amazon’s 30 day policy. I saw their company name on Amazons website and tried to contact them directly. No reply from them. I was pretty upset and wrote a scathing one star review. I then discovered Amazon had a way of messaging the company directly through their channels. I didn’t know this service existed. I used this part of their service.They replied within a few hours of my complaint. Given our time zones were half a world away, they worked with me with lightning speed to correct the problem. They worked with honor, with courtesy, and, although I had a broken tool, they shipped a new one out to me. I assume they are now monitoring their corporate emails a little better now, but – bottom line – when they found a problem, they fixed it. I am changing my review to four stars. I did have a shovel that broke (lost a star for that), but they stood behind their product and made everything good with lighting speed.

I've used commercial spade shovels up in the Cascade Mountains while working on digging up Alpine Fir trees for a guy's nursery. I would use this spade for the same hard conditions without reservations. I have used it in my yard in both rocky and areas with a lot of roots. It worked great. I was able to dig up underground sprinklers without any difficulty and much more easily than my other spade shovels. I also dug up a volunteer Douglas Fir including root ball very effortlessly from my yard.

Made cutting down 36” to locate, remove and repair broken irrigation pipe so much easier. Should be great for planting bushes and shrubs as well.
