I've been buying these for years. You can measure about anything. You can measure the speed of anything that rotates or oscilates. Recipricating saw, sickle bar mower, any motor or rotating tool, etc. You can put it on the pulley of an engine and read that too.Just beware of multiple readings per rotation. For example, if you point it at your ceiling fan: is it picking up the reflection from the 1 piece of tape you put on it, or 5 reflectsions from the 5 blades? If you have an idea how fast the thing is turning, it will be easy to decide if your getting extra readings because it will be 2x, 3x, etc as fast as it should be.I even took one apart and put the pieces inside my metal lathe pointing at the spindle (which I painted flat black + a reflector). I put the LCD screen in a metal box visible on top of the lathe so now I can see the speed of the lathe at all times. In 15 years there's been a lot of brands selling these things. But they look the same. They smell the same (china plastic smell when new), and blue color of the canvas case hasn't changed.

I've been looking for a tool like this Digital Laser Photo Tachometer for a while now. This tool is designed to measure the RPM of a spinning shaft using nothing but reflected light pulses. It requires adding a bit of the included reflective tape to reflect light pulses back to the sensor to be counted. The meter only operates when one of the buttons is pressed. The TEST button records RPM while pressed, and the MEM button reports min ('dn'), max ('up'), and last ('la') readings. In my testing I noticed that it measures pretty much any reflection, especially when I didn't use the reflective tape, however there does appear to be some ability to reject incidental reflections like you get from scratches, etc. in favor of longer more consistent reflections. I have no way of testing the accuracy but it's close enough to get a good idea of RPM with power tools like a drill, lathe, or a saw.

This Fitnate digital laser tachometer is simple but works well. It has 2 buttons. You simple hold down one to measure and use the other to see the last measured max, min and last value. It uses an included 9V battery.

This is for "Digital Laser Photo Tachometer Non Contact RPM Tach, Noncontact Laser Photo Sensor with 2.5RPM to 99999 RPM"Price at review time: $18.99Received tachometer, soft side zipper case, reflective tape strips, 9V battery and small manual in unbranded white box. Very easy to insert and remove battery. Simple to operate. Depending on the item being measured, may need to add contrast (e.g. black tape) in case tachometer is having trouble counting accurately.Recommend leaving battery outside of tachometer when not in use, as the soft side case doesn't protect against button presses.

Mine works good and as described. I have no other to compare but I do not get sporadic readings as another review stated. It works and couldnt be any easier to use.

The tachometer readings are erratic and not accurate.

This tachometer gets the job done for basic RPM measurements. It’s lightweight and easy to use, though it feels a bit flimsy and might not hold up with heavy use. The accuracy seems decent, and it’s quick to read, but the build quality leaves a bit to be desired. For the price, it's a solid tool if you just need something simple and affordable for occasional use.
