They are diamond stones. But they are thin as cardboard. Compared my more expensive diamonds plates these are very flimsy. I dare not use these with out a strong flat backing piece of hardwood or similar material as I’m sure they would bend under even medium pressure while sharpening chisels or plane irons. Also after a few times using these, the diamond grit appears to get thin or actually disappear. So it doesn’t seem the grit is bonded with the thin sheet of steel (at least I think it’s steel). You get what you paid for.

I sharpen all my knives by hand and have for almost 60 years. I have tried and used just about any style of stone or carbide/ceramic device.About fifteen years ago I bought a diamond sharpening stone by a quality maker. It lasted the 15 years but the diamond surface is just about gone.A new replacement would cost $35.I found many of these flat plates and settled on this one. They are stiff, are patterned well with the diamond shaped pattern and are not wearing at all so far.I use the 320 to repair a badly worn edge, then hone with the 2000.I have not used the other two yet.
