Yes, it is an incredible affordable sharpening stone - I think most people would agree that outside of a used whetstone, this item is likely the cheapest entry item that you can find on Amazon. But don't get yourself fooled - this sharpening stone is not bad at all. It excels in rough shaping and then finer sharpening of a blade and truly shines with work tools (chisels, for example). Knifes and scissors works well, but keep in mind that "true" whetstones usually quadruple the highest grid on this stone for some finer sharpening work (at around 1000 grit at least). A low grit gives you a distinct advantage of abrading large areas and thus can "rescue" knifes or tools with imperfections (dents, small chips, etc) far quicker than higher grits. On the other hand, those low grits cannot fully polish the edges for the best cutting edge.Given the price, this is a fantastic stone and I love using it. The overall procedure is a bit more drawn out, since it requires soaking in water for a lengthy period before use, with sprinkling more constantly. However, it does its job and offers two grits for some level of control.

Stone comes provided with a corse and less course side. Both sides are COURSE. I would not consider what’s called the honing side a side to hone a blade, rather a steppingstone to a finer grit honing stone. Also they are advertised to work with water, but the box says oil no mention of working with both. The stones are so porous that when water is added it immediately sucks it in. Everything I mention is OK !!! The combined stone is superb for grinding a new edge and after using the finer side the blade will perform. My only concern is the lack of lubrication due to the porosity of the stone. However the stones performance is admirable and the grits are a must for grinding a new edge. Price is a home run ( even if the stone deteriorates ) the cost is minimal. Absolutely would recommend to a moderately or advanced sharpener. It maybe a little tricky for a novice like myself.

I recently got a job at a State Park. One of the first things they asked me to do was to cut down some vines. I was appalled when I went to the tool shed and saw how dull all of the tools were. A workman is only as good as his, (or her) tools. I asked how I could sharpen them and was directed to a bench grinder. For garden snips? Since I dont want to GIVE the state my money but wanted sharp tools I was looking for some inexpensive sharpener. This stone is GREAT. Whenever I find I have some free time with nothing to do I grab half a dozen tools from the shed, sit on a bench under a tree and get busy. My boss thinks I am a hard worker who takes pride in her job, I think I am sitting on my fanny under a tree in a park enjoying the weather, and I know the next time I have some bushwhacking to do this stone has made all these tools, from the hand axe to the loppers to the hedge clippers to the garden shears, razor sharp.
