Works as intended. I use it on my gouges. I don prefer a leather strop over this though, but this definitely has is place in the workshop

I consider myself a very good tool sharpener... I can put a razor edge on just about anything. But, I find this product very awkward to use...That being said, all my DMT products have been of very good to excellent quality.I suppose I will get better at using this product over time, but wish I had purchased the DMT Diamond Honing Cones Kit instead.UPDATE: I purchased the DMT Diamond Honing Cones Kit (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004WFT4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) and found it to be far better for my sharpening style. I now have both the "Wave" and the "Cones"... the latter is far better at removing the burrs from ground edges on my turning tools. I can use most of the length of the "Cone" vs. a very short cutting edge engagement on the "Wave".Does anyone want to buy a very slightly used "Wave"???

I have a decent variety of dmt sharpening items and like all of them, but this one just isn't as useful as it sounds. Despite having tapering channels to help fit a variety of sizes the curvature didn't match the shape of any of my lathe or carving gouges unless I held them at weird angles that would have given them multiple different cutting angles over the length. If this had a course cutting grit on the other side it would have been at least feasible to get a gouge ground to a shape that the fine side could be used on, but unfortunately it does not. If you have a lot of in cannel gouges this might be more useful but I can't see it being worth it for any others. It does seem to be of equal quality to other dmt stones I have in fine grit which is why I give it 3 stars.

I think a lot of the critical reviews of this product may be from folks who don't understand the use of diamond stones or who are looking for that "magic bullet" that's going to make them a better sharpener. This stone requires a short break in period, just like any other diamond stone, to get rid of any roughness or weird spots in the grit. I just used the round end of one of those cheapo wrenches that comes with furniture you need to put together. The rounded portions are meant to be a universal fit for all gouges, so you still need to understand the sweep on your chisel and what section of the stone works for that shape. Otherwise you'd need a separate stone for every chisel....not practical to say the least. My stone came with some scratches and raggedy spots that came out immediately when breaking it in. The side with the grit is the side with the mesh stamp and the DMT logo. My only complaint is that I wish they had the grit bonded to a heavier piece of metal. It's not flimsy and doesn't bend....I'm just used to the weight of my Ultra Sharp stones. I recommend this stone for those folks who are looking for that specialty stone to fill in where their flat stone is just a hassle. I'll still finish out with a 3000 grit flat stone, but this will get me there first.

Sharpening a #2 20mm is pretty tough. Should come with a video.

I would not buy this if you are looking for a quality sharpener for your carving tools. I would first-off say that the instructions and QR code video that you get are worthless. I gave both a look and it shows how useless it is for having such a small area for each diameter. moreover, I noticed that on first use all the coating came off even when rubbing as softly as possible. I bought a sharp pebble with a 400 and 1000 grit it works so much better. Also, I like how it has shapes for the v and u shape tools for easy sharpening. Again, I am talking about a different sharpener and not the over-priced piece this review is being written about. I would look for Sharp Pebble sharpener(s) they are far better and most are cheaper too.

Bought a set of low-cost gouges on Amazon, and found lots of machining marks on the inside (back of curves) that I have had to remove using the Scary Sharp method (sandpaper, wetordry p[aper, and round objects of various sizes. Now that I have these marks removed, the back and bevel are smooth enough to use this sharpener. It took me a while, and several failed ideas, before I figured out why the Wave-E wasn't sharpening my chisels. Now that I have a smooth surface to work with on the chisels, the DMT Wave-E makes the smooth surface on my chisels mirror smooth, and gives me a really sharp edge.Especially good buy when on sale. Helps get chisels shaving sharp. I just wish DMT made a larger diameter diamond sharpener. The diameter of the curve on my chisels is about 3-1/2 inches, and I have to work them side-to side instead of back and forth as in the instructions. This works really well on my smaller radius gouges.Worth the money.

This sharpener is good for those that use curved wood chisels. But I use it for my tactical knives that have recurves in them. I did not like the idea of using sandpaper on a curved surface since I could not gauge how even the surface was and I did not have anything that firm to put said sandpaper on to make a good sharpening surface. I bought this because I have used that other DMT sharpeners and love them. you would use this sharpener just like you would and other sharpening stone, so there is no new way to try and use this. I would not be able to use this on and serrated edges, however, because the serrations are too small for it. I have not seen large serrations that would fit the small end of this sharpener, so if this is what your needs are, I would stay away from this product. Overall it is very easy to use if you are familiar with any other sharpening stone system, especially the DMT stones, and works well with recurved knives to keep the recurved edge from becoming flat..
