  • A sound meter, also known as a decibel (dB) meter or noise level meter, is a device used to measure sound pressure levels in an environment.

  • A-weighting (dBA): Mimics human hearing, used for general noise.

C-weighting (dBC): Captures low frequencies, ideal for industrial noise.

  • Apps are convenient but less accurate. Dedicated meters are better for professional use.

  • 30-40 dB: Quiet (library).

    50-60 dB: Normal conversation.

85+ dB: Risk of hearing damage.

  • Store in a case, keep the microphone clean, avoid extreme conditions, and calibrate regularly.

Easy to use for live checks. Would give 5 star if you could capture data without having to start out connected to a PC each time. This defeats done if the ease of use for a key feature.

I bought this device after a bad experience with another item from competitor (where software crashed during data logging); with this item no issue and data logging works great! (I use it to record our dog's decibel when we're away)Pros:- Data logging from 1 day to several months depending on your acquisition rate setting- Great visualizing tool, plus export to Excel js easy- Long life on battery + uses USB outlet as alternative power sourceCons:- To reset the recording before pressing "Record" you imperatively need to connect via USB + Start the software on computer + Upload the setting + Record button (however a great occasion to download your collected data)A great improvement would be to have it accessible over Wi-Fi or/and Ethernet port.

I purchased this for work, to test the noise levels of some our equipment and help determine if we need to do any sound mitigation. It works great as an on the spot meter, just turn it on and it works. It also works pretty good as a data recorder, though mine required hooking it up to the computer and setting the recording parameters in order to get it to record. Once it started recording I could remove it from the computer and it would keep on recording. However, I was not able to get it to stop recording, or start recording again without hooking it back up to the computer. This isn't mentioned in the instructions or other places I've looked, so I think this might be a bug, and not intentional.Data download was easy enough, just stop recording and hit the data download button in the SW. There's also a feature to save the data to an excel file, but it kept giving me errors when trying to do this; so I tried saving it as a text file, and I was then able to convert that text file to Excel.I did a test and had it record every 1 second for 3,000 data points, after about half an hour I stopped it and was able to download and open the 1800+ data points pretty easily.I took a star off because it wont start or stop recording unless it's hooked up to a computer running the software, but that's the only real issue I have with it.

June 2022 Update: It still works fine. It was very helpful in easing my concerns that my dogs might be barking while I’m not home. Discovered another FUN use: Thus can be a fun educational ‘game’ for kids (with supervision), such as, how much noise is ‘ambient’ in one area verses another, how loud and nearby a sound has to be to make a difference in the reading (kids can run around the yard making noises on that one), how much noise a basketball bounce makes verses a tennis ball bounce, all sorts of learning ‘games’ can be created around this (with supervision).ORIGINAL 2019 Review:Works great, super easy to use with software. Super easy to download data from device to PC. Super easy to export that downloaded software data to excel. Need to have good vision/wear glasses though to set up or can risk not recording data by mistake. Also if batteries run out no data recording and no warning. Had that happen once too. Using the PC software that comes with device you simply have device plugged in to PC (using enclosed USB cable), choose 'connect' from software menu, and then choose 'parameters' from software menu and set parameters. Parameters means how often it takes a data reading. You can do every 3 seconds if you want. The more time between readings the longer it will log data - and the software lets you know how many hours/days it will log data for based on the seconds between readings. It can log data for more than a day at 15 second intervals between readings. Anyway, you save the parameters while the device is connected choosing manual option in software. Then you choose disconnect menu option in software and you can disconnect meter and then whenever you're ready set it up and make sure the power is on and push the record button. If you chose fifteen seconds you will see REC flash every 15 seconds. When you're ready to stop data readings, turn power off, hook back up to PC using software, choose download data, and it sucks the data off the device. The software menu also has an export to excel option. Super easy. SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT: Wish there was wireless in device along with an app so I could see device status/data realtime on my phone to make sure all in order/recording.I also like that device has a tripod receiver - I had a flexible Gorillapod tripod already that allows me to place this just about anywhere.Originally Used for: See if my dogs are quiet while I'm gone & measure noise levels.June 2022 Update: It still works fine.
