I received this today and since I'm sick with a cold, so I decided to try this. It works fantastic. I have so many different skeins of yarn and no room to store them so I decided to make cakes for easier storage. I have a manual winder but it gets tough on the arm and the wrist. This is a game changer . The reason why I gave it a 4 is it is made kind of cheaply.

This unit arrived with one of the yarn guides broken. It still works but I am disappointed with the broken part.

Live this! Easy to use, not to loud, very durable, I would use a regular screw driver to screw in the yarn feed. The screw driver provided didn’t work.

I was initially hesitant about whether this electric yarn ball winder could handle extra-large, one-pound skeins but it absolutely does! The first time I used it, I wound a one-pound skein with no issues at all. It also worked great for super bulky yarn, handling it just as smoothly. One thing to note: it’s best to stay nearby while it’s running. One of my skeins had a knot and when the knot reached the guide and couldn’t pass through, the machine stopped and made a whining sound to alert me. I simply turned it off, removed the knot from the guide, wound that small part by hand and restarted the winder to finish the job. This winder makes the process so much easier and saves time, you can multitask while it works, as long as you’re in the same room to handle any small issues. I really, really like it and highly recommend it!

This was a nice upgrade compared to the hand crank one I first got. The spool makes larger cakes and the tensioner is easy to adjust.

Note that there is a 10% coupon currently in effect.I’m new-ish to crocheting and totally new to knitting. I’m still figuring out what I actually need for the hobby versus what is a nice to have. A yarn winder squarely sits in the nice to have category, but I have to admit that it’s a very good nice to have. I like to pull the yarn end out of the center of the ball, and after awhile, the skein gets very loose and collapses in on itself. This yarn winder makes it easy to rewind the yarn into a tight cake. There were a couple issues at first, but I’ve been able to address them. First, the washer and screw that hold the winder together was loose. The winder would completely fall off in the middle of winding. After finding the right sized allen wrench, I was able to tighten the winder, and it hasn’t fallen off since. Also, the notches at the top of the winder don’t hold the yarn in place once you start winding. I now tape the end of the yarn down. It’s an annoying extra step. I wish the notches were narrower so that they would keep hold the yarn. I found that I had to fully tighten the tensioner to achieve a decently tight ball of yarn. Otherwise the balls were too loose for me. Finally, I wish that the yarn holder was narrower. Because it is fairly wide, even if you wind your yarn at the maximum tension, you lose some of the tension once you pull the wound yarn off the holder. All that said, I’m happy with the product.
