From the Manufacturer

Both the CMT Lock Miter Bit and the new Baby Lock Miter are the perfect tools for any and all your joint projects. Use the Lock Miter for making jewelry boxes, frames and right angle or parallel joints in stock from 5/8 to 1-1/8. For humidors and small jewelry boxes, we made the Baby Lock Miter to make joints in thinner stock - from 3/8 to 3/4. To produce perfectly fitting miter joints, mill the piece with the inside face flat on the table centered to the bit as shown in step 1 below. Mill the other work piece with the inside face vertical to the bit and fence, as shown in step 2 below. For sturdy parallel joints follow step 1. Lay the other work piece inside face up and mill.

Don't try this unless you have a powerful router, a strong fence, and a good miter gauge. This bit cuts well, but hogs a lot of wood out on each pass. I didn't have a decent miter gauge and got a vicious kickback. Make sure you have the proper setup and this bit will make some beautiful and strong joints

You can’t beat quality. Before buying this bit I bought two other ones at much much lower price and I got exactly what I paid for. When I finally gave up trying to do my project with those cheap bits I did what I used to do and Buy top quality tools to accomplish something. CMT router bits are about the best router bits that you can possibly buy. This large lock miter bit from CMT is no exception. It produces completely predictable and repeatable results and fits perfectly in my collection of other CMT router bits. Unlike cheap invitations this bit will probably last a lifetime and it brought back to me a lesson that I learned a long time ago. Buy quality tools and they take care of you. This bit is outstanding. Don’t waste your time and money with imitations.

CMT makes great bits. But this one has some inherent problems. The board that gets cut standing upright on the router table fence is left with a pretty ragged edge that tends to leave some gaps along the seam when pared to the second board (cut flat along the table). Be prepared to use a lot of clamps - I mean a LOT to try to get a seamless joint. I don't think it's the fault of CMT's bit or quality. It seems to me to be the nature of this type of bit. It's the first time I've used a lock miter bit, so it could just be new user error, but...

Though setup to make these perfect miters takes a little while, this bit is capable of producing a flawless end product. Be advised though, this is a very large bit - nothing less than a 2 1/4HP router motor will do.
