I really like the way these work, but I didn't realize they aren't for use on a 5 gallon bucket.

We bought these to put on the outside of a 5 gallon bucket to use for water for our chickens. We are able to hold a ton of water, they don’t leak, very functional. Very easy to assemble.

We installed a whole set of these a couple months ago for our chickens. We loved them at first, but they’ve turned out to be very problematic. Not only do some of them constantly leak, but I’ve had to replace 5 of them so far because they keep snapping off from being bumped or something by the chickens. This results in us having to be extremely vigilant about the water so we don’t unknowingly have it all leak out before we realize what has happened, a very dangerous situation during hot summer months. Considering that part of the point of this type of watering solution is so that we can leave town for a couple of days, this has not fit our needs.

I connected mine to a large barrel with a garden hose connected to 1/2" PVC with less than 1 PSI at the cups. These fit and glued up perfectly to my HD 1/2" PVC pipe. It took a couple days for my 8 chickens to learn how to use these. As they learned I kept the previous water system in until they all accepted them. They now much more prefer these then my original water system. I added Teflon tape to the threaded side of the water cups to prevent leakage. After installing, 4 of the 6 continued to dispense water into the cups when the chickens weren't using them. I took them apart and found 2 O-Rings, a very small one and a larger one. The small one seemed to work fine however the large one wasn't completely round and allowed water to leak past. I went to Ace Hardware and found a replacement O-Ring for 47 cents each and replaced them. They now work without any leaks and my chicken love them.9/26/2023 Update: I haven't had any leaks since changing out the gaskets. I have had 2 of them break at the PVC Tees most likely from a chicken jumping and landing on them. These are not very strong and I would not recommend for inside small coops where they would be prone to chicken collisions due to crowding. I'm trying to come up with a device that I can place around these cups that will protect them from these impacts.

These leak. I only installed 4 of the 6, but all 4 were leaking. Water kept dripping, and I was trying to figure out why. Long story short, there are two sources for the drips: the threads where the valves twist into the PVC tee, and the valve itself. I used Teflon tape on the threads, which solved that issue. I figured out that if you twist the little stem that allows the water to flow, you can stop the valve from leaking. Kind of.I'm using a gravity feed setup with these water cups being fed from a 5 gallon bucket mounted about 5 feet above the cups. I was hoping to use this setup when I went on vacation next month, but I don't think it's going to work. A 5 gallon bucket would be more than enough to water three chickens for 5 days, but not if it's leaking. If all of the water leaks out on day 1 (or 2 or 3), the chickens will die before I get home. I'm going to have to find a better solution.

These were AWESOME for the first few months we had them. Then my chickens grew to their full size and one of them stepped on a cup and completely broke it in half. I thought maybe it was already cracked somehow and she just sped up the breaking process so I tried again and the same thing happened. They are easy to install and easy to wash out when they get dirty but they're just not sturdy enough for 4 hens.

I got these delivered today. I installed these very quickly. Had zero issues with quality. I purchased a 1/2” bulk head fitting and installed the fitting into a 5 gallon bucket. I got one stick of pvc pipe and some fittings at the hardware store primer and glue. This was great. My only concern with the install with be this winter when the water will freeze in the pipes. We will find out this winter if issues arise. Definitely purchase. Leave your existing water system in the coop until you see your birds actually utilizing the new system effectively. You don’t want them getting thirsty. My next purchase will be a float valve and running a couple hundred feet of underground pipe*update*Made it though winter. The valves tend to leak shortly after install. I believe it is a poor design for valve. The price is hard to pass up. Would buy again only because I have the set up.
