About this item

  • 1.6-LITER (0.3-GALLON) HOPPER: large poly hopper with tooth-edge; you can easily scoop ice melt/halite to fill the hopper instead of pouring in product, quick with less mess or waste
  • THUMB-CONTROL GATE ADJUSTMENT: adjust the gate opening with one hand while still cranking the handle and spreading with the other; you don’t need to stop and adjust the gate, you can just keep on walking and the impeller is designed to deliver an even spread pattern
  • LARGE HANDLE: easy to grip and fill with one hand; accommodates small and large-sized hands and the easy-crank handle is large enough to grip if you’ve got gloves on
  • POLY CONSTRUCTION: it’s lightweight and easy to clean; less metal means less wear and tear and corrosion, poly is protected from ice melt/halite and other harsh winter particles
  • PORTABLE: keep it on top of your ice melt bucket or on a shelf, store it in a cabinet when not in use or keep it in your trunk; it doesn’t take up much space and you can pull it out when you need it
  • IDEAL FOR SMALL SPACES AND QUICK FIXES: use on sidewalks, walkways, stairs, around vehicles and smaller areas where larger spreaders can’t go
  • *NOTE: not recommended for use with rock salt, sand or sand mixes

Take a bite out of winter with Chapin’s 1.6-Liter hand crank ice melt spreader. It features a rugged poly scoop with a toothed edge for cutting through ice melt/halite making scooping easy. The thumb-controlled gate adjustment and trigger gate control are designed to handle the ice-melt smoothly, enclosed gears keep debris out. The impeller is designed to provide an even spread pattern. Great for steps, sidewalks and areas a larger spreader can't go. Not recommended with rock salt, sand or sand mixes.

I was excited to get this and just used it. I am not totally satisfied with it. It kept getting stuck with the salt I was using. Not sure if it was the type of salt or just how it works.

So far, this spreader has held up well. It isn't cheap, but the crank mechanisms on the cheap ones tend to wear out fast. The large cup on this one lets me do a 50' driveway and front walk in 2 - 2.5 fill-ups.

Works pretty good. Depends on the size of the ice melt. Can be a little heavy. And the track might get stuck depending on the size of your ice melt so you have to work it a bit
Exactly as shown everything fits perfectly

As long as you close the trigger before you stop turning the spreader handle it works great.

Pros -- Gives a nice even spread, makes you realize how much you're using more salt then you have to when you're spreading by hand.- Small, and is designed to be shoved right into a bucket of salt.Cons -- Right handed only. If you're a lefty, this is going to be a bit awkward to use. More than you think.- The spreader mechanism is pretty small, so if you're going to use this, you're not going to be able to use some of the chunkier (and usually cheaper) salt out there. I found that in my area, the only salt that worked reliably with it was the most expensive salt they carried at anyplace around me. It would work alright with some other salts, but would jam, and the jams are pretty difficult to get out.If you're used to buying the formed pellet salt, as opposed to the more rough cut stuff, there aren't really any issues with this, it works great when it works, and the lefty thing... well that comes with being a lefty. If you're looking to save money, and part of why you wanted to get this was to use less salt, you're going to spend more on upgrading to the fancy salt then you save by reducing waste.

This hand-held spreader is okay. It does spread the salt in my laneway. But it is not as sturdy as I thought based on the promotional video. It struggles a bit with coarse salt. As well, when it is windy, the salt goes everywhere but on the ice. A spreader lower to the ground would be better.

It is unfortunately a very expensive scoop only as it doesn’t disperse the salt at all. Very disappointing.

First time I used this product it broke. I loaded it up with salt to spread around my driveway and went to work. Within the first 30 seconds it was stiff to move the handle. The handle was the first thing to break. I had already loaded it up with salt so I tried to move the handle around without the peg and it was very stiff. Mind you this brand new, not clumpy salt. When I continued to try and spread the salt, the handle would get stuck and not move. I continued to try and loosen the handle by moving the spreader disc and it wasn’t budging. Eventually after trying to rotate the handle the mechanism that connects the handle to the spreader wheel broke and the handle spun freely without moving the spreader disc completely making the device unusable. Disappointed in the quality. I live in Montana where I need a dependable device like this. Unfortunately I was hoping this would be it.

Would work amazing for home use if only using a little. Got it for my store here and it was broken within / days the spinning thing doesn’t spin anymore. Still works great as a scoop. Not to bad but could have survived longer if it was for at home use
