This slow feeder is entirely made of wood. One of my cats is ok with it. The other cat loves it. She is into music and sounds and each of the wooden cylinders have a tone when they knock up against the other cylinders. It's not music per se because they aren't tuned to notes but it has a musical quality to it, think wooden wind chimes. One thing to watch out for is that your cat is likely to disassemble it by pulling the cylinders out of the feeder. It would be better if they were prevented somehow from removing them.Otherwise, you might end up doing the 'ole "hilariously slip on a banana peel trick" when you aren't paying attention.

the design could be better to hold the rollers in position

Beautiful puzzle feeder. It's challenging my cats and they love playing with it! I recommend it to owners whose cats overeat, it definitely helps.

I picked this "slow feeder" up as a (rather punitive) Christmas gift for my mother's cat, Cody. Cody used to spend his days chasing laser pointers and playing with his brother, but he's since fallen into a life of unbridled gluttony in his midlife crisis years. It arrived packaged very well, and its actual construction looked pretty nice. It wasn't finished with any varnish, oil, or what-have-you, probably out of concern for the cat's health, so that's one factor to keep in mind if it's going to be sitting next to a water bowl, or if your cat is fed wet food. This is strictly a dry food bowl. You don't want it sitting next to a water bowl that may get tipped over, either. Why the three stars? Great question. As other reviewers have mentioned, the rolling bars in this food bowl will simply fall right out without modifications. Minor modifications, but modifications nonetheless. Cats are smart, and they're certainly persistent, so if you try using this straight out of the box, your cat will make a few simple alterations to turn this from a "slow feeder" into a dinner plate. To keep the bars from rolling out, I drilled two holes in either side and tapped in a few short pieces of oak dowel. That keeps the bars in the feeder but still gives enough room for the cat to find his food. This little slow feeder would be a 5/5 if it simply came with a couple dowels or pegs and pre-drilled holes. Such an oversight is totally mind-boggling. If you don't mind doing the work yourself, you can't go wrong with this!

Photo says it all. After 5 minutes, cat was more interested in the box (and there were still treats in side the puzzle). Also one of the rods came out. Returning!
