I had a head bolt break off in the last quarter inch of a 2 inch hole. I used the provided drill guides to drill in the screw, tapped the bar into place, put the nut over the bar, and tried to back the broken bolt out. All that happened was the brass bolt part that slid down over the extract rod stripped out before the rod even tried to turn. Even though the rod was the correct one for a 5/16" bolt, I went up to the next size. Same issue. What should be hardened metal to help turn the shaft is brass and stripped out, making it totally useless. I now had the rod stuck in the bolt and it wasn't budging.I managed to find a small 1/4 in drive socket that fit the end of the bolt extractor shaft, I used a 1/4 -> 3/8" and then 3/8" to 1/2" adapter to try to turn the extractor shaft to remove the broken bolt. I managed to get the shaft out but only because it was a harder metal than the head bolt, so instead of grabbing to pull the bolt out, it just stripped out the hole drilled into the bolt to use the extractor.I was trying not to have to drill out the engine block and insert a sleeve, but that was the end result due to this extractor kit's cheap brass nut to turn the extractor rod.I only gave it 2 stars because the drill bits and drill guides ensured I, mostly, got drilled into the center of the broken bolt.

It worked for what I needed it for. It was easy to use and nicely organized.

I had a bolt snap off in a 23hp mower engine block. It was only .25", so I needed something small to extract it. This tool's smallest extractor worked perfectly. Everything you need to extract a broken bolt is included in the kit, and it seems to be relatively hard steel. It didn't snap, which is what I expected to happen, so I give it 5 stars for working as it was intended and didn't break.

Really nice set of extractors. Well made and durable. If you are looking for a set of extractors one thing you have to keep in mind that the tapered extractors that you see mostly only grab the bolt or whatever you are extracting at the big end of the tool so only a small amount of the tool is ever in contact. These types of extractors give you full contact the entire length of the tool so they are best for really stuck items. The only con with these vs. the tapered threaded style are you can back out the tapered tool easily where as with these it is much harder to remove the tool but worth the extra aggravation IMO.

There are probably dozens of approaches someone can try to remove a broken bolt, but this one was new to me. I knew that you can drill out a rusted or seized bolt, but there is always the danger of thread damage. Here you get drilling guides and the extractor gets an insane amount of gripping surface. Luckily I didn't need this kit yet, but I have a lot of confidence that it's a good solution. I feel much better having this in my tool box for that one case that hopefully never happens.
