Very happy with this puppy... Honestly, it was more than I expected. (for the price) super construction and a actual PROPER ENGLISH MANUAL!! (no Chinglish) He|| has truly frozen over. It's just a few pages but it didn't need to be any longer. Perfect English. I'm finally proud to say I can read! The screws were a little tight (a bonus on a 3rd date) along with the Zoom. But once freed, I was good to go! I don't have any aspirations for a well known, expensive brand any more. This one RoCks. Just saying ¯_(ツ)_/¯ p.s. This one doesn't have that goofy ATC sticker plastered on the top... even though it has ATC. For some reason that just bugs me. All (spelled ALL) the super cheap ones have this hallmark. Nuff said. Bye

I learned the hard way how to use a refractometer. I tested this refractometer against my hydrometer with my fermented cider. Like many 1-star reviews said, I wasn't getting accurate values. I was okay with that as long as I could make a calibration curve for it. I proceeded to do so using sugar and RO water with my hydrometer. When I did this, I got identical values, +/- 0.001, throughout the whole range of the refractometer.Asking chatGPT, it told me the following. After reading it, I found the refractomoter/brix tool in my brewfather app next to the hydrometer temperature correction tool that I was already using before.chatGPT:The discrepancy between the refractometer and hydrometer readings in your fermented cider is a common issue when measuring the specific gravity (SG) of alcoholic beverages. This occurs due to the presence of alcohol in the liquid, which affects the refractometer’s reading. Here’s why:1. Effect of Alcohol on Refractometer ReadingsAlcohol, produced during fermentation, changes the refractive index of the liquid. The refractometer is calibrated to measure sugar concentration in sugar-water solutions. It doesn’t account for alcohol, which distorts the refractive index and causes the refractometer to read higher than the true SG.2. Hydrometer and AlcoholHydrometers are designed to measure the SG of liquids, and they do not directly measure sugar or alcohol.Post-fermentation, the hydrometer reading is influenced by the reduced sugar content (from fermentation) and the presence of alcohol, which decreases the density of the liquid.3. Why the Discrepancy? Before fermentation: Both refractometer and hydrometer give accurate readings of sugar concentration and SG.After fermentation: Alcohol skews the refractometer reading upward, while the hydrometer reading accounts for both the residual sugar and alcohol content.4. Correcting the Refractometer ReadingTo get an accurate SG reading from the refractometer post-fermentation, you need to apply a correction formula. You’ll need: The original gravity (OG) (pre-fermentation SG). The current refractometer reading (Brix).Use an online calculator or the following formula to estimate the corrected SG: Corrected SG=1−0.00449⋅ABV+(0.00394⋅(Refractometer SG))Alternatively, tools like Brewer’s Friend or BeerSmith have calculators to simplify this process.5. Key TakeawaysYour hydrometer is likely giving the more accurate SG (1.011), as it inherently accounts for alcohol density effects.Your refractometer reading (1.045) needs correction for the influence of alcohol.By correcting the refractometer reading with an appropriate formula or calculator, you should see closer agreement with the hydrometer reading.

I calibrated it with distilled water to zero and then tried to measure a brine solution of .022 and unit measured 0.016. I just adjusted the screw to 0.022 about 5-6 brix scale. Still useful.

Defective instrument. Could not set zero. Adjustment screw was completely tightened when received, but needed to go further to set zero with distilled water. Borrowed a hydrometer from someone instead.

Impossible to see the meter -- does not allow enough light inside chamber to read.

This is the first refractometer I’ve owned. Those of us who have made beer or wine generally have heard of one of these items but never used one. The reason why was the cost which has come down. I’m not sure it will totally replace the beer hydrometer the next time I make beer, but it will be put to good use. This simplifies the measuring process greatly. It is auto temperature correcting unlike a hydrometer and is very simple to use. The only extra step you’ll need to do is figure the alcohol percentage as it doesn’t have a scale for that. It's recommended to calibrate this before use. I found that I didn’t need to adjust it as it was already showing zero with distilled water. If it does need adjusting, it comes with a little screw driver and is a simple process of turning a screw. This is a none-powered unit. Simply add a couple of drops of wort to the glass plate, put down the plastic cover and aim at a light source. The eye piece is adjustable for vision and is very easy to focus. What might take 30 minutes with a hydrometer takes no more than a couple of minutes with this. That’s including clean up.A hydrometer is usually very accurate but it needs to be used at a specific temperature. It was always cooling it or allowing it to warm to that exact temperature that took the extra time.Love the box but not so much the foam rubber inside it. This seems to me to be a poor choice to hold it in place for storage. I think a rubberized plastic would be better. Foam rubber can soak up liquid. So, you will want to clean this before putting back in the box. You don't want a stray drop or two of sticky work soaking up on that foam rubber. The eye droppers supplied with it are also rather cheap and a thin plastic that almost look disposable. That's not much of a problem because glass eyedroppers are cheap and I think easier to clean as they can be taken apart. On the whole, this can be a welcome edition to your beer making supplies that you will rely on for years to come. I can’t believe the price on these have become so affordable.

First time buyer. First time making wine at home. It’s my mistake, but I wouldn’t have bought this if I had known that the specific gravity needs to be lower than this device can read in order to complete the wine. Either way this thing can tell you when to switch to the secondary fermenter from primary and is actually decent quality. Ignore the crank that said it doesn’t let enough light in. It takes light from a window and it’s crystal clear.
