Solid build and markings stamped into the coated steel. Accurate on both sides/ends in SAE or metric. Smallest measurement is 6.25" (about 159mm) and largest measurement comes to about 14" (about 356mm). Good tool for measuring the wear and tear on any brake drum to diagnose it's service life. Brake drums get wider/larger with age while brake rotors get thinner. With this gadget you can tell exactly how much wear is on the drum so you don't do a brake job on a run out or unserviceable drum. When a brake drum is too wide, the parking brake mechanism usually doesn't stay put inside the drum/wheel and the travel distance of the wheel cylinder can be too great and cause a brake fluid leak or brake failure.

This brake shoe setting gauge is constructed of steel and is sturdy enough to produce accurate results.Numerous comments on similar gauges here on Amazon state the gauge is not accurate because the inside and outside measurements do not match. Well, they are not supposed to match! The tool is used to gauge the inside diameter of a given brake drum by expanding the two sections until the tool’s two points are touching the inside of the widest part of the drum and then the knurled nut is tightened to hold that distance. The tool is then flipped over, and the two flat gauge arms are used to adjust the width of the brake shoes on the car’s backing plate using the brake adjuster mechanism. Logically, if the inside and outside measurement distances were the same, the drum would drag heavily on the shoes and the brakes would lock up. Therefore, the tool is designed with the flat outside arms distance to be .020” (0.51mm) SMALLER than the measured drum diameter to leave clearance for the shoes inside the drum. This tool does that job accurately and repeatably. My only gripe is that the small, knurled brass nut meant to lock the two sliding halves of the tool once it is inside the drum is too small to tighten easily so the measurement doesn’t “slip” creating a potential for inaccuracy. I just substituted an 8mm wing nut in its place and now it works perfectly.

Nice appearance and simple to use. It should save time for initial settings of the brake shoe spreaders.
