I use water trough heater in a pondless recirculating waterfall feature. I simply drop it into the pump basin and plug it in. We recently had temperatures down to 4° F and as you can see from the video there's no problem with it keeping the water flowing for the birds and animals that come in. I'll see how long the second unit last and revise review in a year or two.

I really needed a way to keep water from freezing in my chicken coop. I used a 2 gallon bucket and risked running an electric cord out (because the cord is only long enough to reach outside the coop and run). put a plastic cup around the connection to shield it from snow/ice. Turned out fine.
