About Us

The Berkley story is deeply rooted in the idea of the American Dream. It's about hard work, struggle, and tough times. And it's about building partnerships to accomplish goals. Still, the story of Berkley is much more than the story of Berkley Bedell. It's also the story of dedicated co-workers and loyal customers, who were equally willing to take risks.

It all began in Spirit Lake, Iowa, in June of 1937, when 16-year old Berkley Bedell took 50 USD from his paper route earnings to start a business selling his hand-tied flies to fishing tackle shops and vacationing anglers. In his upstairs bedroom, with hair clipped from the family dog, Stubby, and feathers from the backyard chickens, young Berkley crafted flies to entice local bluegill and bass from their underwater cover. The Berkley Fly Co. was founded.

By the time Berk graduated from high school in 1939, he was employing several area girls who made flies, silkworm gut, and cable wire leaders in their homes. The business soon outgrew Berk's parent's basement and living room. He expanded to the second floor of the local grocery store, using a tub filled with ice and a fan for air conditioning.

After attending the state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to start Berkley and Company. The business focus was on its cable wire leaders. One evening, while reading Popular Science, Berk learned about a Connecticut company that was producing nylon-covered cable for sailboat rigging. After visiting their plant, he began to work on nylon-coated wire for use in fishing leaders. production began in Spirit Lake. Shortly after this, the distinctive Berkley heart logo was designed with the slogan "nylon leader with a heart of stainless steel."

Berk next became interested in extruding nylon monofilament fishing line. At that time, all nylon came from DuPont. After receiving a license from DuPont, Berk returned to Spirit Lake to begin work developing equipment to produce nylon. The initial extrusion equipment consisted of reclaimed washing machine wringers, bicycle wheels, and other homespun materials. Soon Berkley was marketing private brand mono as well as Dew Flex monofilament. Ongoing experimentation would soon yield the company's breakthrough innovation - Trilene.

In 1959, Berkley introduced Trilene at about the same time DuPont introduced Stren. To help introduce the new line, Berk sent out thousands of sample spools of line and asked store owners to have their best fisherman try it on a spinning reel. Fishermen loved the line and it began the successful launch of Berkley Trilene.

The next four decades were a time of great growth for the company. In the 1960's Berkley entered into the rod business, which lead to international expansion in the 1970's. Soft plastic baits made an appearance in the 1980's. The 1990's through today have seen significant technology improvements in all of the Berkley products. From the beginning, Berkley has committed significant resources to research and development - a continuing strategy that has resulted in countless product innovations, including Berkley Trilene, the Lightning Rod, PowerBait, FireLine, and more recently Gulp!? and Gulp! Alive.

Item was broken after first use. I was able to spool a baitcaster, but after I attempted to spool a spinning reel. First off a 8000 spool does not fit. The wheel that holds the spool pinning rod had issues holding onto a 4000 size reel. The crank arm to spool line kept coming off. The teeth which is placed into the wheel kept coming out which caused me to use tape to keep it working properly. And right before I typed this, the gears started to make noise and skip. Unfortunately I'm a couple weeks outside my return window. This is a warning to stay away from this product. Your time and money will be wasted. Don't waste your time on the internet or youtube looking for reviews. This item is not it.

This is a better device (in my opinion) than the more awkward gizmo I bought that’s shaped like a candy cane from Piscifun. This version sits nicely on a tabletop and lets me adjust the spool tension as I load up the reel. The instructions in the back are somewhat lacking, however, at least for spinning reels. It doesn’t mention anything about the other groove in the base that’s available. It seems that it’s meant to orient the spool of line pointing towards you, which some online have said is necessary when loading up a spinning reel (with the line coming off the spool counterclockwise to avoid line coiling). I can’t confirm that that is how to do it, since the instructions don’t say. But it’s dead easy for a bait caster. Overall, if you’re an avid fisher person, I think this is a solid buy! It also has a little depression in the middle to house the optional reel unspooler Berkley sells.

Overall, a decent piece of kit but overpriced for what it is and it comes packaged in that abominable formed plastic that takes tools to cut open.I have some older reels that have 2-1/8" feet (the part the rod clips to). This spooler won't hold reels with feet this short even though they work fine on any rod. That's a disappointment - it would have been an easy design fix. The retro-fix is probably to temporarily tie-wrap the reel to the unit while spooling.

Love it ! I’ve did 8 reels this wk. I’m looking for more . l think it works Great! I would recommend it highly . Very easy to do just center up spool put a little tension on it and crank. This so easy to use. Now I will put new line on more often. Can’t say enough about this little machine. Thank you it works.

let me get straight to the point.-Very easy to setup and use.-Works great for spooling line on my reels.-You can adjust the tightness that you want the line to spool onto the reel.-It also has a little thing that you can use to cut the fishing line once done spooling which i find very useful

The line Spooler does a good job. Spooled 12 reels in no time. Was easy to set spool tensioners. I don't believe you could find a better Spooler for the money.

Bought to replace one I had that someone borrowed and never returned. This is a great little tool for respooling line quickly and easily. I managed to respool 2 baitcasters and a spincast using 110 and 330 yard line. It is small enough to throw in your tacklebox in case you need it by the water. For the price these are currently at Amazon I can't recommend enough - I might even buy a spare in case someone ever 'borrows' mine again!

This works well, I just tried with a few bait caster reels. Videos I saw online had a bunch of guys using this tool, so I wanted to get one to make it easier. I think this will help with spooling the line real tight versus having someone else do tension on the line. It worked as advertised.I would however recommend a clamp to hold this thing down to a table or bench. This thing is cheap plastic and very lightweight. So while trying to apply a hard tension myself, it will bobble around. The rubber pads on the bottom really don’t do a ton. But it works. I wish it was a bit more sturdy for where the line spool attaches on the metal bracket though.
