I have clay soil so it always reads medium to high moisture. I have learned that clay soil holds more moisture even though that isn't available to the plants, so I am getting used to the fact that middle is actually low for my plants. That's not the fault of this reader. The PH meter moves a little but then settles around 7 (neutral) or a tad over every time. I find it hard to believe that the soil all around my yard, including right next to the foundation, is basically the same. Also, the 7 and 8 are really close on the meter, and the highest possible is 8, so it is actually hard to discern if the soil is truly alkaline. Hence the three review.I don't use the light meter.

After taking over the house the grass was embarrassing. Learning more about the soil helped me start the job in a right way.

I have had this soil meter for awhile now and find it is quite accurate as I have tested it many times with along other soil meter products I have. I like there is no battery required.

I was so excited when the 3-in-1 meter arrived!! I tested it immediately on my raised bed garden soil, with no ph or moisture readings at all. I figured it may be operator error. I filled up a large plastic cup with a mixture of soil from all the raised beds and brought it inside for a closer look. I checked the meter with pure vinegar and it read a ph reading of roughly 6. I'm confident the reading should have been much more acidic. I took some moister readings on the sample, (the soil was not dry), and got no moisture reading at all. I continued to add distilled water to the sample, taking readings as i added more and more distilled water and didn't get a reading until the sample was the consistency of soup.I don't know what else to say other then this is item doesn't seem to give accurate readings. I don't trust it enough to use the results to adjust the soil composition. (which is why I bought it).On the plus side the light meter worked!

I laid new Bermuda grass in April and put new soil and tall fescue just two weeks ago. The flowers I’ve planted in the flower beds along the way. One has succeeded and the other has been a garden of death and that was the reason for buying this soil tester.I want to show everyone what I received out of the box. I got home and went straight to the yard because my sprinkler system had just watered and the soil was loose. I have a small screwdriver that I initially used to make the holes to insert the probes.I soon found they were not as fragile as people claim and only had to use it in a couple areas. But, I do recommend using the screwdriver method in case you have rocky or clay lawns. You have to use common sense. If it doesn’t slide smoothly into the ground, why force it in. As for the rest, the pictures I uploaded speak for themselves. Every area was a little bit different and most importantly, I got a great overall picture of what is happening with my lawn and garden areas. I don’t need to use this until I make amendments and if this only last me one year, at 16 bucks I’ll gladly purchase another for next year. I will also be doing professional soil tests this year as I get more serious about the main and garden but this is a new house and new sod so this is a great start. I am accumulating more professional equipment along the way but this soil tester is no slouch and I don’t see it giving me a problem as long as I take care of it just as I would a professional tool. Hope this helps.

Having paid twice to send off soil samples at a decent cost, I was hesitant to buy something this cheap, but I wanted something to check PH in the large container and raised garden beds I have. So I chanced it on this and tried it out in my already tested ground soils from the same location that I sent in two previous sample. While it is hard to read it exactly like those given the scale, I find it to be pretty much right on. My two previous tests came in at 6.4 and 6.6 and from what I can tell from this little gadget it is right there in that range. . I bought this for the PH function and don't really care about the light and moisture functions. I'd say give it a try, you can always return it. I'm pleased.

I love this thing! I purchased dwarf citrus trees to grow in containers, and they are finicky about wet feet, so I wanted a moisture meter. I agonized over reviews and the price of digital units; I didn’t want to spend a fortune as a garden hobbyist. In my deep dive into reviews, I found one that recommended this unit as an alternative to the pricy digital ones. I’ve been so happy with it! I would have seriously overwatered my little citrus trees without it. In fact, I’ve discovered that I’ve been overwatering my tomato plants for years This meter has also reassured me that the plants in our west-facing courtyard are in fact not going to die of thirst between waterings in our high mountain desert summer heat.. I now have this bad boy in my shed with a repurposed spiral notebook and pen, and I make the rounds of all my vegetable and ornamental plants every morning. I haven’t even used the light and pH functions yet - the moisture meter alone is well worth the cost. The instructions do say to wipe the probes off as you move from plant to plant; I’ve repurposed an old sock for that and it lives in the shed with the meter and the notebook.

I've only had this a week, so my review may change (and will update later), but so far the water reader works well as a gauge, which is what I bought it for. I am not certain if the pH meter is totally accurate, as I do not have anything to compare it to, but it seems to show relative levels, which is all I need. The light meter does not work at all, but I didn't expect it to at the price, and I bought this for the water meter. Again, I am just using it as a relative gauge to learn how my various plants are behaving and reacting to their environments and it has been helpful for that. I deducted one star because it's still relatively new and because the light meter is useless.Feb 2020 update: the water meter still works well, but I don’t use the other functions. I don’t mind, as I bought it for the water meter function.
