Beautiful set but the ink pot was broken. I did have to order a replacement and had to hassle with returning the first set. Great value.

These aren’t fancy at all. But they’re good! Rough hair texture. Good for watercolour or gouache.

This is an absolutely gorgeous giftable for yourself or a loved one. The grinding stone is large, the ink stick is beautiful, the weights are exactly what you need for rice paper, the water bowl is big, the brushes look excellent and the brush holder is nice and large as well. The box is stunning and well made. The price is excellent also. Can’t wait to start using it!

The quality of this set is surprisingly good for its price and not only the brushes are good for a beginner/intermediate level but also the porcelain items are sturdy and beautifully designed. The box itself containing the items is resistant and on itself could be a decorative piece in your home or studio .

For a beginner kitt, this calligraphy set its a good product for the cost. It doesn't come with instructions so I have no idea how to use the sticks. Also, it has a faint order of wet feet. Is's nothing that some baking soda or potpourri can't fix. Because of the faint smell, I wouldn't send it as a gift but for the purpose of learning a new skill is a great bargain!

This set is actually much better than I was expecting, at least twice as good as one of those smaller fan-shaped sets I purchased at a similar price point in the past. When it arrived, I was surprised how big it was! Everything (brushes, ink stick, ink stone) is a nice manageable size, not too dinky like the other set, and if you put in the grinding time you can get a nice dark ink.I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the brushes: I've only used one of the four brushes so far, but it has performed well with dilute washes, thick strokes in heavy ink, dry strokes made with the side of the brush, and even delicate point work. I'm attaching the three paintings I've made with the set so far; they're not artistically adept, but they show all the different types of effects that I was able to get with the same brush and ink, using two different kinds of inexpensive paper.

This is a stepping stone for beginners.I would also recommend this for all the pros and teachers who would like to teach new students how to use said supplies for the art that is Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting and don't fancy the idea of having their much more prized and precious supplies being carelessly ruined and mistreated.This is a great beginner set it contains four brushes, a water bowl, an inkstone/ well, the paperweights; not needed but appreciated, it has the ink stick, the table top brush holder and this very nice hard wooden box. I would say you can use this as a travel set; you know going to an art class, going to relatives for the weekend, going to the park or on a vacation even! Especially when you don't want to lose or have your much more professional supplies lost, broken or stolen on a vacation, damaged in your baggage or at the airport.If you later want to invest in much better supplies go ahead and do so get your custom wooden box your antique ceramic bowl and table top brush holder invest in engraved wooden brush holders, bamboo holders, ceramic with intricate designs. Splurge on that rabbit hair,goat hair, ram hair, horse hair, bear hair whatever kind you desire!!! Invest in ink sticks that have actual gold on it. Buy expensive watercolors or gouache for adding vibrant colors to your pieces and very expensive paper with dried flowers and leaves. That is your choice.If you're a beginner I would say buy yourself paper in a packet that's $5 or $7 and buy this $20 set and improve and if you later find that you're not interested you didn't spend a fortune; which is good you can always just sell this to someone else, gift it to another who is interested or donate to a school.
