I was a draftsman for 28 years, so I know drafting equipment. This is a fairly nice compass set. I'm used to all metal, so when I ordered this,I expected very low quality considering the price. I was pleasantly surprised; however, there are two places where metal absolutely should be used, but on this compass they are plastic. One are the screws that lock the horizontal gear in place, and the other are the seats where the attachments are added. I expect both of these will cause the compass to wear quickly. I am using this to layout woodworking projects, so I will be using it a lot.

Had to reorder this to replace the one Amazon first shipped that had a huge crack in the front of the protective case. This case is a little beat up, but a great improvement over the first, though I had to switch out everything inside, because the compass had obviously been used, as had the beam.I love Alvin compasses, they are solid and very well designed and built. I've been using them for years.But shame on Amazon for selling these as "new", because they've obviously been used by someone. New items should arrive in pristine condition; neither one of these did. The shipping packaging may have been the problem with the first one--it came in an unpadded, thin plastic bag instead of a box. Going cheap on the shipping package is wasting money and time in the long run for all concerned.

I’ve tried a dozen compasses. The Alvin non-quick release compass is slightly better as it has zero play for acurate drawing - especially sacred geometry or complex polygons.However, for quick release and for pens, this is the best compass out there. I’ve tried so many other compasses, like Mr Pen, and they have way too much play - at lease the quick release models.Highly recommend

The hinge legs are a pain, it's impossible to draw an accurate circle because unless you hold it in an awkward position, as in trying to keep the two legs from bending with one hand while you draw very slowly you circle end won't meet. I looked it up on Youtube and an architect said it is her favourite compass but she Crazy Glues the legs in place!

Finally!!!! A compass that works! the hinge stays at the adjustment you set. we tried a less expensive set that had great reviews but was crummy. so happy to have this. our work is now doable....and because of that....it is enjoyable!!!!

It's okay. I'm using this compass with my art work and designing not as a draft or architecture tool. It is a solid product and will be useful to those who know how to use the attachments. As for the seller: The plastic storage box was cracked and won't stay closed. I thought I was purchasing a new product not a used one. This was my fault for not reading the description closer. Because the storage box won't stay closed I've had to find another way to safely store this product with my art tools. Since there wasn't an instruction booklet I haven't learned how to use the tool as a whole, yet.

Very disappointed with this purchase. It feels like a quality product and looks nice, however, the tightening knobs do not tighten it enough to keep the pieces from moving and changing as you use it. It is especially useless with the beam arm attached. No matter how hard I try to crank the tightening knob, the arm moves around a lot in the slot and just can't make a consistent circle.I suppose if you are using it very lightly it may hold its position better (not with the beam arm though). I use this in my artwork and need it to make a nice, visible mark and it just can't do it.I totally wasted my money on this one.Update: After a couple months of use, one of the tightening knobs snapped off. It is garbage.
