This product should be kept in a separate storage bag or something so you don’t lose the small parts.

First of all, this is not the same as the pictures. The pins are both plastic. The dial will not stay fixed and automatically rotates due to pressure caused by the threads. Drawing gently will also cause expansion. In general, I found Staedtler the worst German drafting tools manufacturer. Horrible quality and overpriced.

This compass works really well! Don't skimp and buy a cheap compass if you need an arc locked in place, buy a product like this. Accuracy, Sturdiness, Easy to Use, and Overall 5/5 stars!

Got this bad boy two years ago. It draws some MEAN circles and just might be bombproof. Or at least bulletproof. This tool screams quality. Zero play in the arms. Solid metal construction. Three words to describe it? Hefty, hefty, and hefty. You're proud because you know your classmates with plastic protractors are all jealous of this shining beacon of geometry you hold in your grasp. The cons: Do not run around with this instrument in your pocket! It has at least one very pointy end! It WILL poke you and you WILL be in pain!

Excellent compass! The lead is very durable, and will last you a long time as long as you're careful. Once you select a size of arc you're trying to draw, this compass stays locked on it rather nicely. Don't go with a cheap compass if you're going to be using it for an extended period of time.

This is a good solid compass, large enough for almost all of my needs in making bowls on the lathe. It's construction and workability seem very good and will likely last me forever. The reason for 4 stars is for only one reason: it was advertised to include a pouch and lead. It did, a tiny pouch with ONE piece of replacement lead. This seems rather ridicules. Even if it only had 3, I would have given it 5 stars. I do recommend the compass and the price was very good.

Steadler makes good stuff. This is a great example of their quality. The action on it is a bit tight, so it makes your thumb angry at you if you have to make heavy use of it in one session, but it keeps true. The big question I have seen on it is what size lead it takes. With a touch of common sense I found it uses about a 2mm lead which is the same size as any wooden pencil has in it. You can go out and buy replacement leads for it, or you can steal a golf pencil from any convenience store that has lottery sales and hack it up into half inch sections, stripping the wood from the graphite and filing the end to a chisel point. I went that rout because paying good money for something it takes me five minutes to make free is dumb.

Originally, I did order the GeoMaster Bow Compass from Amazon and then returned it. I then went to my local art store and purchased this one in person. This one is better both because I purchased it in person and for other utilitarian design reasons.I went in because I wanted to examine first-hand the threaded precision wheel. First off, when purchasing a compass that has a threaded precision wheel, the threads of the adjustment bar are what make the difference. If your needs aren't that precise, the GeoMaster and its coarser threads won't be such a big deal. But if you are doing super precise work or are a minimal error tolerance type of person, the coarse threads will drive you batty. One needs to make sure the threads are fine enough for the intended usage, and the finer and more precision-machined they are, the more expensive it gets. It's not something you can verify while shopping online. The GeoMaster's threads were too coarse and when I squeezed the compass arms, I could feel the play. I'm not saying I squeeze my compass like a stress-relief toy. Instead, I need my compass to to draw consistent circles when I trace from one sheet to another. This is why I went to the store in person - to test out the compasses, to make sure I got a model with fine enough threads, and to make sure that the one I was purchasing wasn't an overlooked factory reject.I also appreciate the extra features on this compass such as the modifiable/sleeve drawing arm and the full metal body. This particular model has fulfilled my anal-retentive quality expectations. It is extremely precise, doesn't wobble, and, with careful treatment, will last me a very long time. I am happy with it and intend to love it by putting it to lots of use.P.S. - I'm not sure what the big riot is over the lead. It is a standard 2mm thickness easily found in art supply stores. You get it in a tube pack of 2 from Staedtler, Alvin, Mitsubishi - or whoever, your preference. The leads are probably regular pencil length but just sharpen them to a point with sandpaper or a 2mm lead sharpener, then break it to the length that works for you. Also up to you is the hardness/softness of the lead from hardest (4H) to softest (6B).
