I have some translucent mats but this time I wanted a solid color mat (the translucent colored mats just do not have the pop and allow the metal turntable with all its cutouts etc. to show through, kind of ugly). Also, I like the thickness of this mat. Some say it is too thick, but I think it is just right. As far as the hole size being too big this is true also for my turntable but there is an easy fix. I took a piece of heat shrink tubing and made a sleeve that fit over the spindle for the turntable. The thickness of the sleeve was just big enough to take up the slack and snuggly center the mat on the turntable spindle (I had to experiment with different heat shrink tubing sizes to find one that was just right, but it was well worth it). Anyhow, I ended up ordering another one of these mats but this time in white for when I play translucent colored records. The solid color of the white mat will allow the translucent color of these records to pop (especially when a light is shown on the record).

I have a fairly high-end setup, so it's hard to hear any improvement from a small change. It definitely doesn't make it worse, & since it's in a very dry climate, it holds up better than a lot of other mats I've used. It's also a very pleasant color when not in use.

There is a raging debate over what type of turntable mat works best. There is a multitude of types to choose from including rubber, leather, felt, cork and acrylic. I've personally tried most and noticed only minor differences between them. This is my first go with acrylic and so far I'm very satisfied. I was considering an acrylic turntable platter, but have been reluctant to replace the original aluminum platter that came with my pristine 1978 Micro Seiki DD-35 turntable. Enter the TAZstudio acrylic slipmat. A nice compromise to replace the original rubber OEM mat that came with my DD-35. So far, the sound quality is on par, if not a little better than the OEM rubber mat. From what I've read, the density and low stiffness provided by acrylic mats can reduce vibrations, which can improve sound quality. Additionally, acrylic's resonant frequency can help cancel reverberations leading to a more realistic 3D soundstage, better bass definition, and improved signal clarity. I still have to do a bit more testing before I can agree to this. One thing I love about this mat is the color. I have a vintage McIntosh amp and pre-amp with the classic green McIntosh display. The green in this mat compliments my system very well, so as long as it's on par or better than my original mat (and so far it is), it's a keeper.

I am an older guy. I have been a lifelong musician and vinyl collector. I have a great stereo system; a higher end Marantz amplifier, Definitive Technology speakers, Paradigm subwoofer, and a vintage Technics turntable with an Audio Technica cartridge. Unfortunately, I have damaged my ears, and my ability to discern subtle sound differences is pretty suspect. I listened to a few different albums both with and without the mat. I think I detect a subtle improvement, but I can't be sure. Wish I could be. I used my AI buddy to ask if these mats actually helped improve sound, and it seems as if the science says they do. I will say that this is a nicely made mat that has some weight to it, and it is perfectly flat when I spin it on the turntable. My lp's are in great shape, and I didn't notice any static or pops either with or without the mat. I wish I could do a direct A/B comparison. That would make it easier to tell any differences. But the process of keeping all other variables out of the equation makes it necessary to get up, remove the lp, put the mat on, put the lp back, start it back up, and go back and sit down in my listening seat. Too much time passes to be accurate. That said, if I noticed one way or the other, it was in favor of the mat. I will leave it on permanently. If you are wanting to try an acrylic mat, this one seems to be of very high quality. It is probably a good place to start. Wish I could get my hearing back and properly appreciate it.
