They worked great it says on the packaging that they turned mustard yellow that's when they're ready to use but they don't turn mustard yellow they turn more orange than yellow and then the lead comes up almost a purple on them so don't wait for him to turn the mustard yellow you'll be there all day

I panic purchased these after our toddler found a paint chip deep under an old baseboard.I expected the test to ease our minds that it wasn’t lead, instead it showed positive for lead, compared to our modern wall paint which was negative. The positive lead swabs were immediately violet just like the chart on the side of the tube. The modern paint stayed orange/yellow.We proceeded with an x-ray and blood test, per poison control recommendations.

identified 2 of 4 vintage dinnerware sets laced with bioavailable lead. Any dinnerware pre-1960 should be tested. These swabs also identified vintage brass chopsticks as having lead on the eating surfaces. This is not for heavy metal hysterics, for example, 3 different types of lead crystal items tested negative though known to also contain lead. A cost-effective and reasonable way to avoid ingesting dangerous lead without having to dispose of every heirloom item as if it were toxic waste.

These were critical while we were remodeling an old house we own that has layers of lead paint underneath new paint. It was great to be able to test any broken or flaking areas for lead so we knew how to safely proceed with repairs. The 30 pack is a great value, and the swabs are easy to read with the color scale on the bottle. Quick results.

Easily used this to see if this WW2 Army trunk had lead paint or not. The tip very quickly became red, indicating a positive for lead paint. The tests come back negative on glass that is leaded crystal, or on items that have lead paint under a clear glaze; like antique dishes or glass. The tests are wonderful for literal paint, but not for items that contain lead and do not have paint.

It’s actually terrifying how many lead items were in my room, I tested one lead item twice and got positive result (contains lead) and tested a item Ik was sterling silver twice aswell, it came back negative {no lead c: }, I come from a family with an elderly father ( he’s 73) his mom was born 1912 and because I look a lot like her I inherited many of my grandmother’s items. I’m so glad this test exist. An especially scary fact is how many of my brand new hair accessories contained heavy lead. I wear those almost daily to work. Definitely sticking to cellulite claw clips from now on. And I’m 100% buying more of these cuz I thrift a lot

I bought mugs at the dollar store and then started to wonder if they were safe to drink from lead-wise. This kit was an attempt to find out. There was no reaction so they may be safe. I'm not sure whether to trust the tabs, but I followed the directions.

I tested several samples of painted wood, kids toys and die-cast cars as well as a lead fishing weight. The fishing weight lit up violet. About half of the sampled Hot Wheels turned red while others remained orange/yellow. One 2014 manufactured in Malaysia reacted with a bright violet color. None of the wood items or other kids toys reacted. Also, it doesn't turn mustard yellow just yellowish orange so the instructions are poor. I'm suspicious so many Hot Wheels reacted so will have to find a different test to confirm. Vintage die-cast cars made in England some of the Hot Wheels manufactured in Indonesia in 2007 and 2014 from Malaysia reacted totalling 50% die-cast cars positive for lead. Either a lot of imported die cast cars contain lead or these tests are producing false positives.

My kit did not work. I conducted multiple tests for lead paint in a flour mill from the 1850s, which had served various purposes over the years. Despite numerous attempts, all swab tests returned negative for lead, showing no color change. Doubting these outcomes, I suspected lead paint might still be present given the building's age so I had a friend that had an XRF analyzer (a very expensive tool commonly used by professional lead inspectors) to come and cross check my results. The XRF analyzer revealed lead content ranging from 2.5% to 10% in several areas, including doorways, windows, and stairwells, all of which had previously tested negative with the swabs.Furthermore, the instructions provided were confusing. The instructions said to dip the Q-tip in water and waiting for it to turn mustard yellow however the tips were already this color, as also seen in the product images on the listing. Additionally, when testing on deteriorating paint—a common trait of older, lead-containing layers—the Q-tip would adopt the color of the paint being sampled. This wasn't generally an issue, except when testing red or pink paints, as it became challenging to discern whether a color change was due to the paint or lead presence. The kit I received was neither expired nor unsealed, eliminating the possibility of a compromised product. However, the lack of expected results leads me to believe this was a case of poor manufacturing. Given the critical nature of lead testing, I recommend seeking alternative products and verifying the results through secondary means.

I was trying to find out where the high lead numbers in my home were coming from and with the help of these swabs I was easily able to find and correct the problem! Very easy to use with quick and accurate results. Definitely worth every penny! They're the size of a typical Q-Tip, with nice sturdy wooden sticks.
