I suspect a lot of the water based tests are less accurate because the water source might have a different chemical composition that might affect the accuracy of those swabs. These activate using vinegar and worked like a charm. Really handy for detecting presence of lead on antique china (or at least that’s what I did and it worked reliably).

Worked like a charm, but unfortunately determined that I couldn’t use two of my bean pots that I inherited from my Mexican mom. What a bummer. But lead poisoning is no joke.

I got these because I want to do same paint removal and re-painting in my house. I assume the original paint under all the layers had lead as my house was built in 1959. I don't want to inhale lead paint while removing it.Following the instructions, I wet one of the swabs with white vinegar, or more accurately, soaked it in same. The instructions say the swab will turn orange. Well, only part of mine turned orange. Then, as per instructions, I rubbed the exposed old paint with the swab for 30 seconds. Nothing! No lead.To make sure this works, I tried again, this time testing solder that I know has lead content.I soaked another swab. This one did not turn orange at all. However, when I swabbed the solder, it got darker and darker. I've attached a picture. So I would conclude that this works. Any problem might have been on my end as to the vinegar, which maybe wasn't fresh enough.Bottom line: this is a good investment to keep you and your children safe.

I used these to test some cups that I had laying around that I was curious about and one of the cups tested positive. So simple to use, just wet the tip with white vinegar until it is yellow and then rub the tip around the test area for thirty seconds. If it stays yellow you're good. If it turns pink or mauve, then you've got lead detected. I think everyone should have these in their household!

We knew for sure where some lead had been stored, and it definitely popped positive there, and not in areas we were sure there hadn't been any. Very easy to use and easy to read. Gives a fast result.
