The right-hand threaded tap is labeled simply: 9/16 - 20 HSSThe left-hand threaded tap is labeled as: 9/16 - 20 HSS ** is a Chinese character than translates to LEFT. See attached photo.I suspect HSS means High Speed Steel. Odd, since taps are anything but High Speed. However, the High Strength IS important.

I encountered some used cranks with slightly galled threads and the taps worked to clean the threads.Whether the metal quality is robust enough to cut new threads on a freshly bored crank (no threads), remains unanswered, but then again, that's a job for a machine shop - for when the cranks are being fabricated.I suspect most buyers are looking to bail out of the same situation I was in, and these taps do the job. Just make sure you use the left hand thread on the correct crank and vice versa (did I need to say that?)

Theses taps are made with quality and percision.They work on left and right hand threads size 9/16 - 20.They'd work on bicycles , fitness bikes ,etc,.The only improvement i can suggest is that they should be in different color plastic cases to identify the left and right hand taps easier ,ie, the Red case for the left hand threads and the Blue case for the right hand threads.

I selected this listing as the taps come in a container and I wanted to be sure that the taps didn't knock into each other. Oddly, for something shipped in bubble wrap, the container was damaged and a chip missing. The missing chip is not in the package so it seems that the box itself was damaged before the taps were even packaged into it. I also noticed some rust on one of the taps. Overall, some QC issues that should be improved upon.

The taps work very well. The only issue I have is that they are difficult to tell apart. It isn't as easy as one woudl think to see the difference in the threads themselvers, so a big bold engraved L and R would be ideal. Even a sticker would be helpful.
