I just received this book, 51VA - Muller-Rusch String Method 1 Viola Book, Sheet music by J. Frederick Muller and Harold W. Rusch, a couple days ago. I love the format of these lessons. Not being a fan of Suzuki, I wanted a more structured lesson format like they did years before this Suzuki fad (I hope it is a fad). I wanted a lesson series that had more instruction in the book, and less reliance on the instructor. I am teaching myself for now. This book has you play the open strings first. Then it works fingers on the D string, then it adds fingers from the A string, very systematic. Since I am teaching myself at the moment, I don’t move on until I can finger that string properly on the fingerboard, and bow it properly. You could learn with this book, and the subsequent books in this series, without an instructor, but, naturally, to get input on proper posture and bowing, you should get an instructor. If no instructor is possible, maybe YouTube and a mirror will help with those issues. I am still in search of an instructor. In contrast, with Suzuki, I always felt it was unorganized, and you really need an instructor because there is not a lot of information in the lesson books. I did have an instructor when using the Suzuki method for my cello. If the instructor is not good with Suzuki, you are at a loss because, due the format of Suzuki, you need the instructor. It reminds me of the “Music Man “where the music salesman says to “think the song” and then you can play it. Unfortunately, the Suzuki companion CD’s are not very helpful to listen to because of the over powering accompaniment music included with each song (no option for cello only). Just my opinion based on my Suzuki cello lessons. This Muller-Rusch series lesson book is not being used for my cello lessons. Wish it was.I really recommend this Muller-Rusch String Method series. It is very well organized and not reliant upon an instructor, but for a serious student, an instructor would be recommended no matter what series you used. If I find a viola instructor, and (s)he uses Suzuki, I will ask the instructor to use this series, Muller-Rusch, rather than Suzuki. The two methods would not work together because of the difference of string sequence being taught.(IMPORTANT: I am editing this review to include the following)I want to mention, the description says it is sheet music. I questioned Amazon about this because I have seen “sheet music” as a description before. I wanted to know if it meant loose sheet music pages, or if it is bound. I was told loose sheets. This is not the case, however, with this book. This is a stapled book, like other music instruction lesson books. Very good quality. I just ordered book 2, and it describes it as sheet music, too.
