I had two jobs I needed to do: 1) finish the edge and polish a piece of "leftover" granite that I got from a friend whose contractor broke a piece on a job and left the broken chunk when he brought the replacement, and 2) polish up my marble countertop in my master bathroom that hasn't really been worked on in 17 years and had some bad hard-water buildup around the sinks.First off, these diamond grinding/polishing pads were the wrong tool in my untrained hands to attempt job #2 -- prettying up an already-installed and already-finished piece of stone. I needed way more practice and subtlety in my grip to do this, AND these pads had a small problem that made it hard and annoying for me to do this. The problem is that the hook-and-loop fastener fabric between the back of the pad and the mounting piece affixed to my rotary grinder tended to slide out to the edge of the wheel as I spun it. Meaning I would put the pad on straight, press it down as hard as I could, and within about 5 seconds of use the pad would be off-center a few millimeters. Enough that I could immediately notice how much extra wobble the grinder had and would have to stop, pull the pad off, re-center it, and try again. I couldn't manage the wobble because even with the 3000 grit sander, I had to be very careful on the already-finished, polished stone not to make irregular marks or gouges by holding the grinder at too much of an angle. I tried this job first and almost immediately gave up out of concern of ruining my bathroom countertop. I'm going to try wool polishing pads and some sort of specialized cleaner to finish this job.For job #1, these worked reasonably well because the stone is a very busy "color" AND I'm making it into an outdoor table, so my threshold for quality of evenness and polish is much lower than a kitchen or bathroom countertop. The grittier pads did a fine job of smoothing down the rough edge where the stone had cracked (I had chiseled it into roughly the shape I wanted since I wanted more of a curve on that edge and didn't have a ceramic saw to do that). It took some time and patience (and re-centering the pads, but I didn't do that as often because I didn't care as much about the wobble when doing this rough finishing).I did my best on getting to a somewhat smooth finish on the top of the table but frankly, either I need much more practice or these pads need to hold onto the wheel better because it took much longer having to recenter the pad every 10 or 20 seconds and worry about creating ugly streak marks from the wobbling.Ultimately it sort of did what it should -- it ground stone. But it was very difficult to polish stone, and that's what I needed it for. I think I'm partially to blame (skill and experience) so I'm giving a 4-star rating.

This comes with numerous options for grit. I don't particularly like the velcro attaching system, I found that the pads moved around on the backer pad somewhat. But it's a good price and worth having on hand for smaller jobs.

Nice inexpensive polisher for concrete or granite. For $30 you get 8 different grits of diamond studded pads. They give you several ways to attach the pads to a machine. I put one on my angle grinder and lowered the speed dial on it to about 3000 rpms, which seems to work well. Any faster and it doesn't seem to work any better. The pads are flexible, so they conform to the surface if it's not flat as a concrete porch column would be. You CAN use this to grind away a high spot on your sidewalk if it's not too high. However it works best polishing. Use water to carry away the grit, and don't run it too fast, and it polishes like a champ. After working up to the highest grit, 3000, the granite piece I was testing it on turned out to be as smooth as glass. For the price they want for these, a great buy. How long will they last? Time will tell. Diamond grit is not supposed to dull easily. I give it 5 stars and will report back if I run into any problems I would want to know about before buying these.
