Previously I owned an Amprobe that worked 20+ years as a DIYer. I thought I'd try a different brand based on the good reviews so I purchased the Santronics 3115. It rolled off the counter on the kitchen floor and split open. It's only 6 months old, and used less than 5 times. Like others have reported, beware of the fragile case plastic and spend your money on a more rugged tester. One star.

Works excellent, much appreciated upgrad to the kline and other brands unreliable, short lifetime NCVD alternatives that constantly beep and die quickly.

I like the voltage testers that do not make noise. The red light that indicates voltage is nice and bright.

I bought this because my Klein NCVT-3P voltage tester wasn't giving me the warm fuzzies. If I would get the Klein within 3-4 inches of any wire in box it was going off. Not useful. (I love Klein products for the record.) This Santronics unit appears to be well regarded by many electricians. It appears reliable and NOT over-sensitive. It helps me to identify a single energized wire in a box... or the lack of any energized wires. The main gripe people seem to have is that it is a bit delicate, made of a sort of hard plastic. If it drops, you may need to buy a new one.So this is now my go-to. But, I generally do multiple tests for presence of voltage and I know when I'm beyond my knowledge for a task and need a professional (rarely;).

I had one of these years ago, think I got it from my Dad. Used it for many years after I got it, probably dropped it a hundred times and it never quit working. It was pretty beat up the last time I remember using it, I lost it somewhere along the way. Since then I've used all the name brand ticks, greenlee - fluke - klein you get the point. They don't last long in my experience and I am tired of buying a new one every year. I decided to look on Amazon for red and white wiggy, and it popped right up. I like it because there are no bells and whistles. No sound, no switch, just a good basic voltage detector that never let me down. Comes with batteries installed.

I have had a Santronic for years and it still works. I have bought others and they are too sensitive. The Santronic is very accurate. I like mine so much that I bought one for each of my sons. Even though they are on all the time, the batteries last quite a while. There are no buttons to hold while in use. It will detect voltage in electrical cords too. It is a great sensor. After my experience with other manufacturers, I pick the Santronics as my go to voltage detector.

I use such sensors more than 20 years. It is the best sensor for appliance tech.

20 years in the field, was shown this by an old timer early in my career. Its the only one I trust every time, 100%. No frills, always on, batteries last forever, accurate enough to identify single hot wires in a bundle, pocket friendly, made in USA(not verified). My biggest complaints are the same ones mentioned by many other reviewers. It's just not that rugged, which is frustrating. Don't drop it and be gentle with the clip. I broke a couple in a less than a year at first, then annual replacement, the one if have now is going on year three. If Santronic ever made a sturdier version... After watching so many apprentices fumble around trying to figure out if their hi/low multi light beeping contraption is even on. I've began buying them as Christmas gifts for whoever is working for me.I wasn't compensated for this just sharing my experience.

I'm a professional electrician. It reads accurately. Only glows when the tip is right on a live wire or object. Seems to do a good job of ignoring trace induced on one wire from a parallel one in a wiring rats nest. I really love how I can just remove it from my bag, tap it somewhere to get it to light up and show it works, then test a circuit without fiddling with a button every time.I had it at my side for around seven months without the batteries dying. Doesn't seem that it always being "on" drains the batteries significantly. It snapped clean in two after a week or two of climbing around in attics sitting in my side-pouch. I must have been leaning pretty hard on my side and pressed it against several joists. It's just 1/8th inch of plastic housing this tick tracer has, so it eventually snapped. The only other thing it fell short at: It does insert and read the hot slot of a standard 125v receptacle, but it doesn't reach far enough in to read 208v or 277v receptacles what for 30-50amp appliances.Still works after snapping. But I decided to go with a fluke afterwords because I'm too rough on gentle equipment like this.If you're a technician whose job isn't too rough on their tools, this is a great little doodad. My favorite among all I've tried for the convenience and accuracy. I just wish it were a bit more skookum.
