All heat pumps have a reversing valve which is operated by a solenoid coil. Most heat pumps energize this coil to move a pilot valve to align the heat pump for cooling operation, a few heat pumps deenergize this coil to align the heat pump for cooling operations. Most HVAC technicians don't carry replacement coils around as there's too many different styles, however most carry this magnet. Last week when our heat pump gave us heat when we were trying to cool our house this magnet gave us cooling back.IF you're comfortable taking the power off your heat pump and removing the fan off the top of the outside unit you can remove the reversing valve coil and install this magnet. You know you've got the magnet orientation correct when you hear the pilot valve click as you slide the magnet onto the reversing valve. If you don't hear a click reverse the magnet and try again. If you still don't hear a click you need a new reversing valve as the pilot valve isn't changing position - that requires removing the freon in your heat pump and cutting the reversing valve out of the unit, replacing the reversing valve, and recharging the heat pump - that's beyond my skill set. But we've had AC from our heat pump for a week now using this magnet as I wait for a new reversing valve coil. Without this magnet we'd have had to check ourselves and pets into a nearby hotel while we waited, 7 days now.If you're the kind of person who can safely do common repairs to your heat pump - capacitors, motor changes, starter relay changes, etc then you need this magnet. If you're the kind of person that depends on a service call you need this magnet - your service man may not have one or more likely has there's installed on someone else's heat pump that's waiting on parts.$30 for this magnet vs. 7 days and counting in a nearby hotel room? I'll take the magnet please. And if you're one of those few whose heat pump reversing valve is energized for heat you may want this magnet to ensure you'll have heat from your heat pump vs from just the electric strip heaters in your indoor unit. Rheem/Ruud heat pumps are this configuration. If you're going to install this magnet yourself read and follow all the precautions in the manuals that came with your HVAC unit. There are lethal voltages present (240 vac) and rotating equipment hazards (those beefy fan blades on the outside unit). Work safely and if you're not sure if you can, call a technician.

I purchased this TLMKC18 solenoid valve magnet tool several years ago and it has worked fine for testing operation of solenoid activated valves like Honeywell oil burner cut-off valves and ASCO RedHat water feed valves for cooling towers, sprinklers and commercial disposals. It has worked on all of the solenoid operated valves I have tried it onto date, so I am very pleased with it.

I'm in Arizona, USA, and we have hot summers. When we discovered a couple months ago that our Heat Pump only wanted to pump heat *into* the house and not *out* of the house, we had a moment of panic, then phoned up a company advertising a $40 diagnostic. During the diagnostic process, the tech actually made the AC start cooling the house, but soon undid whatever he'd done, and wrote up an estimate for the replacement of our whole system. $7500. My wife told him we'd have to think about it and paid for the diagnostic, which she showed me when I got home.I noticed in the diagnosis that he ""manually reversed the reversing valve"" and that's what made our AC work temporarily. I did some research, and spoke with a friend who does HVAC work, and came up with using this Solenoid Valve magnet to reverse my reversing valve manually (pulling the coil off and putting this in its place). And the house has been cooling just fine since. I will eventually have to replace this AC (Heat Pump) unit - nothing lasts forever - but for now I've saved some pennies.

Great to have on my work truck for units that have solenoid valves. Also works on reversing valve solenoids to test their functionality.
