I purchased a new Rain Bird controller (but found that the instructions for changing the programs were inadequate). By just replacing the power supply, the issue was resolved.

Bought this power supply to replace the original that was installed in 2010 for a RainBird SST-4001 The connector matched but the polarity appeared to be reversed. I did not think this mattered and installed the new power supply. The control unit powered up momentarily before smoke began pouring out of the unit. I immediately disconnected the power supply. Give the amount of smoke I'm sure the control board is fried and I'll need to replace the whole unit.
