I needed to route signals from hardware on my telescope (on the observatory deck) to the controlling computer (in the warm room) as it get pretty cold on winter nights here in northern Pennsylvania. The hardware that controls dome rotation and the position of the dome’s shutter uses an RS-232 interface (since I built the control computer myself, I made sure that it had two RS-232 interfaces). I built two patch panels; one to go on the floor near the telescope’s pier, and a second to go on the computer desk in the warm room. The 25-foot serial cables that I purchased are routed through two 2” PVC conduits that I buried underground prior to observatory construction. I purchased DB9 plates to mount the serial connectors and also purchased serial couplers to mount on these plates. To make sure that I had what I needed, I purchased Male-to-Male, Male-to-Female, and Female-to-Female couplers. They were not all the same! The 25-foot serial cables were Male at one end and Female at the other end (as I wanted). Each end had 4-40 thumb screws for a secure connection. Of the three types of couplers that I purchased, only the Female-to-Female couplers had nuts on each side to accommodate the thumb screws. So I purchased ¼” 4-40 standoff nuts for the other couplers. It turns out that the nuts on the Female-to-Female couplers were only 0.197” tall and the ¼” nuts were too tall for a secure connection. The stems on the other couplers were also slightly longer. For the Female-to-Female couplers, the stems were 0.5475” long; while the stems on the other devices were 0.587” long. I ended up using the Male-to-Female couplers, but substituted the nuts and stems from the Female-to-Female couplers. Thus I give a 5-Star rating for the Female-to-Female couplers and the 25-foot serial cables. However, a lower to rating of 3½-Stars for the Male-to-Male and the Male-to-Female couplers.

Product works as advertised. Needed to run an Rs232 port from a machine to an operator station for data entry devices. Works a charm and thanks to its bland beige coloring isnt in danger of walking off the shop floor.
