This PCM5102A DAC decoder module is a fantastic way to add high-quality audio output to your Arduino or Raspberry Pi projects. The I2S interface makes it easy to connect and control, and the PCM5102A chip delivers clear and crisp audio. I've been impressed with its performance and ease of use, making it an ideal choice for projects involving music playback, sound effects, or any application requiring high-fidelity audio.

This is basically a sound card for any microcontroller that speaks I2S protocol (not I2C -- that's something different, but commonly confused). Certainly a Raspberry Pi can do this, but also the RP2040 chips (Pi Pico), ESP32 and ESP8266. It lets you stream high quality audio out of your microprocessor through the headphone jack on this little board. You can also access the audio from the header pins.Unfortunately, you’re on your own figuring out how to use this. One thing I was hoping for is that I could plug this right onto my Raspberry Pi headers, since the seller says it’s a “HAT format” but you can’t. The necessary pins are not all next to each other on the Pi, and you’ll need to use the included DuPont wires. You’ll also need to solder the header pins AND short some solder pads on the top and bottom of the board for configuration and clock purposes. The seller also doesn’t provide ANY resources, instructions, or wiki links. However, this is a fairly common commodity board, so you can search the web for tutorials to get up and running. If you are doing audio projects with microprocessors, it’s really worth it to get one of these I2S boards (if the MCU is capable), since the audio quality really is good. The board itself is 5 stars, but I’m subtracting one star for not providing any resources to help the buyer get started. Overall, 4 stars.
