A Square Nut is a four-sided nut that can be used in a channel or welded into place. Square nuts have a greater surface in contact with the part being fastened and therefore provide greater resistance to loosening, but also a greater resistance to tightening as well. Square nuts are used along with flat washers in order to avoid damage from their sharp edges and help to increase the strength of the fastener.

Simple square nuts. Way cheaper than hardware stores.

Squares are easier to punch out than hexes so these are great for jig building.

Once I removed the zinc with vinegar, they blended well with my forged products.

It’s got to be the most discouraging thing in a garage. You’ve got one of those small batteries that need square nuts to secure the screws and no nuts. Well I finally said enough to that situation and after finding no one carries these in a hardware store I came to the conclusion I was going to order them and never have to worry again. This package is affordable has a good size range and is enough quantity to do more than one job when the need arises again. A no fail no down time solution to the square nut problem.
