They are similar in function to hex nuts, but are 4-sided instead of 6-sided. This shape increases the contact surface, which can help to prevent stripping and loosening in certain applications. Worked for my needs. I embedded these nuts into a 3D print permanently. The reason to do that is it gives plastic parts strong metal threads. The square nut won't spin when placed into the 3D print like a hex nut might. Threads and dimensions were as expected based on the questions and answers on this page.
