Makes sense. It sounds like a fan because it uses a fan. Simple device with two speeds. You adjust the pitch by rotating the top and the volume by rotating the sides adjusting the size or number of holes. I used to travel a lot for business and found the HVAC units in hotel rooms helped me sleep when I left the fan on all night. With the holes on the top closed on the lowest speed this machine replicates that sound. I have used numerous sound machines as well as phone apps and none of them really sounded like a fan. Another bonuses is this is analog so the sound does not loop. Appears well-made. My wife used one with the kids when they were little many years ago and one machine lasted through three children. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a sound machine replicating a fan sound.

I don't like white noise machines that are just a glorified speaker puck with a basic storage mechanism that houses 12 poorly produced MP3s. Most baby sound machines are this way, many adult sound machines are also made this way. They often loop, lack audio leveling, or the speaker cannot convey a realism that the tired brain will accept. The Dohm is moving real air throughout a housing, and depending on how you twist the housing with the holes, it can produce a high pitchy white noise, or a deep low white noise or anywhere in-between. This means once you find the sound level you prefer, you're done. It does not loop, it's by design perfectly consistent and there's no low-quality speaker. The sound is a natural phenomenon of the mechanical fans inside it.By all accounts, if all you care about is genuine white noise that comes from a mechanical process (like a fan) and want to avoid poorly made digital MP3's squeezed out via a cheap speaker, this is the best option on the market.I often use this in conjunction with a fan during the summer and can skip the fan in the winter. I also bring it on trips to Airbnb's because I can't sleep somewhere else without it.

I’ve had this for a month and appreciate it so much. You can adjust the sound until you find what works for you. This sounds very much like my fan and really helps to block out noise when I sleep. My son recently moved back home and gets up two hours earlier than I do and I’m a super light sleeper. He was waking me up every morning just by quietly opening and closing doors and using the shower which is on the other side of my bedroom wall. This little machine has allowed me to keep sleeping until my alarm wakes me now that it’s too cold to use my fan every night. And it’s very important to note that this generates its own noise and is not playing a sound that repeats. It’s very effective, is affordable, and I recommend it!

I recently bought the Dohm Sound Machine, and I must say, it has quickly become an essential part of my nightly routine! From the first night I used it, I noticed a remarkable difference in my sleep quality. The standout feature of the Dohm is its unique fan-based white noise. Unlike other sound machines that rely on recordings, the Dohm creates a natural sound by using actual fan airflow, which feels more authentic and soothing. The adjustable tone and volume controls allow me to customize the sound to my liking, making it perfect for both light and deep sleepers.I appreciate the sleek and compact design, which fits seamlessly into my bedroom decor. It’s also incredibly easy to use—just a simple twist to adjust the sound. Plus, it operates quietly, so there’s no distracting mechanical noise while it works its magic. One of the best aspects is how effectively it masks unwanted background noises. Whether it’s traffic, barking dogs, or other household sounds, the Dohm creates a calming environment that helps me relax and fall asleep faster.Overall, I highly recommend the Dohm Sound Machine to anyone seeking a reliable and effective solution for better sleep. It’s a fantastic investment for anyone who values a peaceful and restful night.

Anyone who needs a fan to sleep and is particular about the noise understands the struggle to find the right one when your forever fan dies. The one I used for the last 10 + years (!!!!) was on its way out and I wanted to get a replacement that didn’t take up too much space in the bedroom and could also easily travel with. I love this sound machine! I haven’t tried any others because I really thought I’d need the real deal fan sound. I’m not sure if this matches my other fan but it definitely does a great job with drowning out noises and allowing me to sleep much better. It’s compact and looks nice enough in the bedroom without taking up any space. It’s solid and doesn’t move around or get knocked out of place easily. While it is probably too heavy for me to take in my luggage on a flight, I bring it with me every time I go to the cottage and it’s so much smaller than carrying my old fan. I’m a fan. :)

I found it loud at first even on the lowest setting. After a few days, I was feeling "meh" about it. I've used fans for years for noise and with our cold, dry winter approaching, I didn't want a fan blowing while I slept. After using this for over 6 months, I can't live without it. It definitely helps to drown out the noise. I've accidentally trained myself for this trigger sleepiness. I live in a small apartment. I turn this on ~1 hour before bed and it naturally triggers me to start feeling "sleepy". By the time I crawl into bed, I'm out like a light. I also find the noise soothing and relaxing. It's small enough to travel with as well. I'm thinking of buying a backup because I love it so much.*Update* September 2018. I purchased a second one of these for our baby's room. I immediately noticed that it wasn't as loud as the one mentioned above. With a newborn, the louder, the better. After two months of constant use, I noticed a rattle in the unit. Very slight but noticeable. I swapped out our bedroom one to use for now since you don't mess with a newborn's naps. I'm returning this one and reordering. I'm really hoping that the quality and build hasn't changed.
