So this is definitely a bit weird, but I actually bought this as part of a DNA detective course that I was teaching summer camp on for middle schoolers. I ordered it to help them with soil analysis for mock crime scenes.It’s very sturdy looks nice. Has a good ergonomic handle. When you use it it’s just a bit hard to then extract the soil that has been collected is what I found.

OK, so this unit can get the job of taking soil samples done, but if you have hard soil look for something bigger that will allow you to get some leverage and better apply pressure into the ground.This thing is very small and the handle is not comfortable to apply much pressure. I ended up using a hammer to drive it into the ground. It DID draw a good sample when used in this manner.
