Yamaha R&D conducted extensive field tests with leading bands, and has redesigned the bracing for a more open 'free-blowing' feel. The overall balance has also been changed making it more comfortable to hold and play, while the slide configuration has been reworked improving both intonation and tone qualities.

We bought this for my daughter who got into Marching Chiefs! This horn has taken a beating and has needed to be sent back to the vendor once for a defect but they had a fast turn around and their customer service and knowledge is top knotch.

This mellophone is one of the best to me I play for my high school marching band and its one of the most responsive horns out there compared to the king it's right there. This Yamaha give you the same pitch like any other mellophone and sometimes is hard to tune with other mellos but when in tone everyone will be looking at you like a champ by the end of the night. My band director say Yamaha's are good for high school bands but if your in college a king is what you need but Yamaha gets the job done trust me I had heads turning when I go into the upper register ..

I am in the Pride of the Southland Marching Band at the University of Tennessee and I play the mellophone. We use this exact same model and all I can say is it gets the job done. It is not balanced very well because of the weight of the bell, but it has a pretty good tone quality overall.
