How to purchase the right transformer?

  • However in order to purchase the right transformer, it is critical that you know the amp usage by your electronic device. It is always best to be conservative otherwise you risk destroying the transformer and it can be very dangerous.
  • For example, if your device requires 5 amp, buy the Transformer with up to 10 amp. A rating of 300VA means that at 100volt, the unit can sustain at maximum 3amp. If at 120 volt the unit can sustain at 2.5 amp.
  • Indoor use only. Do not operate in a condition that may cause electrocution and fire. Do not operate in a wet environment. Do not operate near flammable substance.

This Variac does what Variacs do very well. I ended up returning it because it only provides 3 amps, and just a few of my applications require more. HOWEVER, it's important to note that the size and weight of a Variac increases significantly when increasing amperage—mostly the weight. I paid just $20 extra and got a 20 amp Variac, and I'm still considering whether or not this was the right decision. I normally work on and build guitar amplifiers and effects, and felt like 3 amps should be plenty. Others have recommended 10 amps for this, but tube amps are low current, high voltage devices; I'll let you do your own research. But for me, I occasionally need more current for using power tools, and this is where the larger model came in handy. As far as the ease of use, the only complaint I had is that I ended up using a label maker to put a black and white arrow on the dial, as it's hard to read what voltage it's set on from a distance. What would really be useful would be some kind of low-fi light up display that shows the voltage—maybe stacked LEDs. I should probably build one as an ancillary attachment. In short, I love this thing, and it's hard to go wrong for the price tag. Variacs maintain their value over time as well, and even a used Variac will likely appreciate with age.

I work on vintage HAM radio receivers with vacuum tubes. Often these will have been sitting around for decades in a garage. Capacitors can leak over time and resistors can change value. This allows me to bring up the line voltage slowly so I can assess the condition of the radio without causing further damage. I took off a star for accuracy but it is more than sufficiently accurate for my purposes. I've had it for 8 months with no problems.

Description was kinda vague and was impulse buy for I needed a isolation transformer not a variac..had to return, did not use so I cant rate accuratly

Contact transformers like this are generally more expensive to build, and more reliable. For the first few minutes of using it, I can tell that this item is a solid product. The control knob is not entirely smooth, and feels cheap. But this does not affect functionality of the product. And yes, I could lift the heavy unit by the control knob (not so smart on my end, and highly NOT recommended). All in all, this looks like a product that you can depend on. It looks like that it will last forever. But I'll update if anything changes.BTW, the voltage output is quite accurate according to the dial.

Some reviews mentioned assembly problems with this. I took it apart before I tried it. I did find the ground insulated with paint but no other issues. I was surprised by the high quality of construction at this price point. I reassembled the unit and tested it. As other reviews mentioned the on board meter and the dial do not agree with each other or actual output. However the transformer does smoothly and progressively alter the voltage over an even greater range than indicated. The voltage changes little between open circuit and loaded. It does what it is supposed to do for a very reasonable sum. Just clean the ground and use a meter it works well.

Pretty good product for the money. The dial scale is slightly off when measured with a DVOM, but the regulator serves it’s purpose overall.

Pros:Works exactly as you'd expectVersatile in its input/output range for any non-industrial useLightweight & portableSpare fuses includedCons:Output is not 100% accurate, but still very close. Totally expected with a physical turn dial, you should be double checking with a multimeter anyway.

I got this to vary the input voltage to a small tesla coil that I have, and it works great. Its fused at 3 amps, has an output voltage meter, and isn't too heavy. These things are good for a wide variety of uses.
