The WoodRiver Block Plane is based on the venerable Stanley #65 low angle and #18 standard angle “Knuckle Cap” design, generally considered one of best block plane designs around. With the widely recognized comfortable chrome plated Knuckle Cap, these block planes look like the standard and low angle versions of yester year. Upon closer inspection you’ll notice changes to the base castings which not only strengthen historically weak points of the original design, but also improve the blade bedding area. Improved blade adjustment mechanisms allow for crisp, easy adjustment of the blades using the rear adjustment knob. The adjustable mouth is very smooth to operate and allows fine tuning of the mouth for work ranging from coarse to creating whisper thin shavings. The stress relieved ductile iron castings are precision machined, flat and square. Each plane is outfitted with a high carbon tool steel tool blade, which is hardened to Rc60-64 for maximum edge retention and ground to a 25° bevel. We recommend sharpening the blades prior to use, however they’re impressively sharp right out of the box.

Poor old dad

I've been a woodworker for going on five decades (not counting my teen or earlier years of messing in my dad's shop). I served a four year carpenter apprenticeship, and for the past couple of decades have been an advanced furniture builder. I am also an unrepentent tool collector and will one day find myself living in a van down by the river. With all my tools (saws, planes, chisels and HUNDREDS of plumb bobs), why would I purchase this Woodriver block plane? First it was on sale. Second curiousity. I wanted to see how Woodcraft competed against Lee Valley and Lie Neilsen. Well, in short, they don't and please note, this is not an anti-import rant! This plane is a copy of the Stanley #18. Unlike the Stanley, this plane is much too heavy, with a block plane being a convenience tool for simple touch up tasks. The knuckle cap also is tricky to put into proper adjustment: too tight and you can't adjust the blade. Too loose and the cap flops loose. Also, the material is heavy with rough edges-not conducive to comfort in your hand. The blade sharpened easy enough, and was only decent in edge retention.I could go on and with comments, but in short, if you have large, calloused hands, this plane will work for you. Otherwise shop elsewhere for new or vintage. At half the price, this would be a buy, but only if you had to have new. If Woodcraft wants to compete with LN or LV, this plane needs a bit more refinement and with a bit of lightening, resolving knuckle cap issues and a tad more attention to heat treating of the blade, this block plane will compete with the best of the best.

Great plane for small projects but takes some time to set it up.

The plane worked very well. Better than many other planes I have purchased.

A Really nice hand plane. The blade takes a little longer to sharpen than I'd have liked, but still a nice plane.

This plane is nice, feels good in the hand, good blade easy to adjust but hard to use, I find that unless I am trying to get supper fine cuts out of it any real push maks the lock open. I hold my block plane more to the back then maybe I should but it works for me but this plane does not. I have the woodriver #4 and could not say anything bad about it, in fact it is the one I reach for more than any other. wood river missed the mark on this one in my mind anyway.

Very well made. Worth the money. LV and LN have every reason to be concerned. As far as this China factory goes, they turn out product that's every bit as good. I bought a low angle block from LV when they first came out and paid about 90 dollars for that too. The Wood River is just as well made. If you need new planes and actually use them, take a serious look at the WoodCraft V3 line, if they follow LVs pricing strategy they'll ratchet up the prices about 10% a year until somebody else comes online to compete.
